all of the Dacron I can find is fly fishing backing. Is that what you are talking about? Can someone recommend a brand and a weight?

Or google Gudebrod tip-up line...was the best I've used back when I used to set tip-ups.  Now I just set tipups when I'm being lazy and don't care if I catch fish...

Oh. ok. That's only 25yds. Do you put the whole thing on? That will get expensive. I've never used tip ups before. If I'm understanding you, maybe I shouldn't even mess with them? I was thinking about setting some for walleye if I get to fish Pymie. I'm not sure if that meat stick will handle a big walleye. What do you think? Thanks Bogey.

IMO, tipup fishing is for guys that are more interested in BSing or drinking beer than catching fish.  Yes, you can catch fish using tipups (and I have too).  But, frankly if you have electronics and you're fishing for walleye and panfish, if you are not catching fish jigging, you should be moving...and it's a lot harder to move when you've got a tip-up set running down the lake.

It's more gear to haul out on the ice with you...more stuff to get tangled, and more stuff that you have to put away when you are tearing down for the day.  I'd rather be fishing than pis$ing with gear.  I used to set tipups a lot before I had a flasher, just to get lines in the water and then "match the hatch" so to speak when I got a hit, or to find more productive structure or depth breaks...but that's a lazier and less effective way to fish IMO now that sonar/flashers are in wide use.

Now, if you're fishing for big toothy critters like pike and musky...that's a different story.

I hope my flasher works. I'm excited to try it out. It turns on. That's all I know. Do you think you'll be on the ice by next weekend, like 1/6?

Yup...might have to do a quick adjust on your drag if you get a big one...I'd be more worried about a channel cat...

HAHAHA! Yup. Cabin fever. I always get it bad this time of year. Thank God muzzleloader is in. I can't wait to get out on Saturday. I need time out in wide open spaces. I'm sorry Bogey. I don't mean to bug you duud. I just can't stand being cooped up. I haven't been fishing in a long time. I got to hunt one day of archery. I got to hunt one day of rifle. I had to work the first day of buck; I hunted the first Sat but had Greg in CT for the second Sat. I need to get outside and enjoy the tranquil solitude of winter.

I hope I haven't annoyed you too much! Sorry.

You're not bugging me at all...I like your enthusiasm!  Just be patient and we'll have safe ice soon enough.   You'll lose some of that energy when I have you dragging gear 2 or 3 miles across a lake in knee high drifts.

I use Dacron  on my tip-ups and catch tons of chain pickeral on them. I've tried what has been labeled as "ice fishing line". It's mono, but seems to have way too much memory no matter what you do to it.
