spinnerbaits
Do any of you use spinnerbaits for eyes? I talked to a guy that told me that he does well on eyes with them. I only got a couple with them, but then again I seldom use them. I use mostly Rapalas for eyes & jigs also. I always thought that spinnerbaits were too fast for them. Maybe I am fishing them wrong. sam

Never used them for eyes, but a round Colorado blade will spin at much slower speeds than a spinner with willows.

You can slow roll a spinner bait too. Tip the hook with a white or chartreuse gulp twister tail for increased action. I put those on buzzbaits too. Can't say I ever caught a walleye on one though.

I could see where it could work but I never caught one with a spinnerbait.

Worm harnesses is the only spinner type tipped with a worm. When water is above 50 degrees. Walleye are too inactive to "chase" any lures now. They seems to conserve a lot of energy. And use more of wait and ambush approach water temp around freezing.

I've seen guys on TV troll them through submerged tree tops in reservoirs out west. They would probably use harnesses but they snag too much in the trees.I do believe it was summer.

I have caught eyes by trolling Beetle Spins with a white curly tail when I used to fish Pymy. My thinking here is that since a walleye's prefered speed seems to be approx.2mph that casting a spinnerbait would result in faster speeds although I don't know how to calculate how fast an average retrieve would be. Anyone know? sam

Count your handle revolutions x inches of a revolution/time (from start of retrieve till end) you will have distance per second x 60. x60 again you still with me? Divide that by (5256x12). That should give you want you want.

slabfinder,48"per sec.x60 sec.per.min.x60min.per hr.div.by12"per ft.div.by 5256'per mile comes out to 2.74 mph. That sounds about right for the speed that I reel. When I use a spinner bait,I prob. go 3x that fast. That is why I think they are not a good choice for eyes unless you slow roll them or reel slower than I do. sam

Sam< I've caught several eyes on spinner baits at Greenlick at my favorite time, late evening or after dark. Not enough though to count on them as a regular go to lure.

We catch eyes all the time on the allegheny with the smaller size ones you get at wally world for a buck. Granted the intended targets are smallies but just like a jig evrything in the river will hit them Mike

I caught my only walleye on a spinnerbait out at greenlick, was very surprised since the water was pretty warm, was expecting a bass when I went to grab it.

Try spinnerbaits at Pymie in late Spring, and fish them around and through the weeds that grow in hard bottom areas. It's a little known tactic but highly productive.
