Yesterday afternoon I killed the buck I had been chasing during archery season. I set up yesterday morning about 200 yards from what I believed was this buck's bedroom. Just after daylight came, the farmer who leases our fields to plant corn, had two trucks spreading lime on the field next to where I was set up. I figured my day was ruined, but decided to stick it out anyway. Around 2:00 the trucks were finally done in the fields and 15 minutes after they left, this buck came by at 35 yards with his nose to the ground. I stopped him and squeezed off the shot. He is my biggest buck to date.

Also, before anyone mentions it, this deer is tagged. I pulled the tag off while taking a few pics

Nice buck. Nice high tines. I shot one just like that last year(also my biggest), except his broken brow tine was on the other side.

I do my own skull mounts. I did two last year and I have at least two more to do this year. Just skin the head. Remove as much meat and tissue as you can before you boil, or you'll have to change the water a lot and it takes longer. You should add borax or Super Washing Soda to the water it helps to break things down. Also watch the heat. You want just a low simmer. A raging boil will force the fat into the skull making it look mottled and less white. FYI the smell is something you just don't get used to. Do it somewhere not likely to offend the family or neighbors.

I do them too, but I don't boil them. I tried boiling them and the teeth sometimes crack or teh bone gets soft. I skin the head out and clean them as best as possible with a knife. Then I put them in a tote full of water and let them set until spring. It stinks, so put it somewhere that the smell won't offend anyone. The flesh will all rot off in the water. Take the skull out of the water, hit it with a pressure washer, and then soak it in a mixture of water and hydrogen peroxide to bleach it white. Do not use clorox. This process takes longer, but it's actually easier and it does a very nice job. It just takes longer.

Congrats, looks like he was still in the rut.    I've tried boiling my own deer and bear and have paid the pros to do it. If you have the money the pro job looks better longer in my experience and keeps the wife happier.  I never tried the Slabdaddy route but it does sound reasonable. I'll second him on peroxide rather than Clorox.

20 Mule team Borax works good for boiling skulls also.

Here's mine from this year. I went with oxyclean in the water this year because it contains sodium carbonate and sodium tetra carbonate. It only took about four hours total. This was my best result to date.
