11/23/12

Original plan was to head west, Oak Orchard area, where my buddy had some awesome Brown action the week before. Neither of us got much sleep so we decided to head for SR. Fished from Ball Park to Pineville and some unconnected tribs to the north. Rough day for us. Only signs of life was an 8 incher that inspected an offering. Saw thousands of fry though. I guess a good sign. I was using fly rod all morning and only managed to hook my hat. I think this one has too slow an action and wind didn't help either. Was my first real effort with it other than the pond by my house.I see Clint and Charlie got some up river and love seeing the pix. Not much of a helpful report but as my dad said you have to go through the bad days to get to the great days. I guess I'm one day closer to a great one. I will keep trying.Keep pix coming- only thing keeping me sane these days.Any advise on a moderately priced rod would be appreciated. Tight lines guys and dumb deer for the hunters out there.

Pete,  depending on where you went to the unconnected tribs it has been tough up there.   Is that where you saw all the fry???????    I saw the same.

I have a Cortland  Pro cast rod and it has treated me well, plus it has a lifetime warranty.   For $100 cant be beat.

Thanks for the report, Pete. I hope your next trip is magic.  I'd try a bunch of different rods in your price range. Find one that feels right to you.  If you bring your reel and line to shops you can  compare apples to apples.  You may get some good casting tips, too.

yea, what Charlie said bring the reel in.  I am very happy with my set up now that I have my new reel.   Here it is.   Cortland Pro cast 9 foot 8 wgt.   Lifetime warranty (which I have used)  $99     Cortland Sterling 8/9/10 reel   Lifetime warranty   $169   Cortland salmon taper line 9 wgt $69.   Super happy with the casting with the new line and the drag of the reel.   I think it has helped me pick my game up a bit.   I  think HT had said in the past that having confidence in your set up, your fly and your drift helps.   I am quite confident in my rig and my flies.   My drift leave a bit to be desired.   My biggest lack of knowledge is reading the water and having confidence that there are fish where I am fishing  even if I cannot see them.

PS  The shop in Pineville  has good prices and one of the guys who work there named Rick knows his fly stuff pretty well.

    Pete:
the report was good to hear from ya getting out.. while the catching may have sucked I'm sure spending time on the water didn't..
At least thats how I view things..

Clint , Charlie and others are right.. It's all about confidence in your set up and presentation.. Thats the straight starting point..
Next it becomes learning the habits and locations of the migrating fish..
It pays no good to bounce around the river all day long instead of learning the key waters..
    I know 3fan knows them well.. :)))
You just know locations and spots that hold fish at their seasonal periods ..
The fish are there it's just putting all the above together to make it happen..  Change everything, fly, bait, leader, drift and presentation until you find what turns them on.
Not as easy as it sounds but rewarding none the least..

Still, never give up searching for that secret spot...

Pete good to hear from ya... confidence is a big one for sure in all aspects... there are holding lies throughout the whole river as they run the entire river... clints suggestions are probably very suitable for you when it comes to rod and reel choices. Cortland was my first fly rod and i actually still have it. Being a nine foot five weight it managed to withstand kings and steelies... quality gear for the buck for sure... tight lines man!!!
