Mammoth and Lower Twin

Both of these lakes began their lowering this week. The trib says they will go down 8-10 feet for weed control. With all of the sediment I bet Mammoth will look like a pond when its down.

Absolutely. The last time I stopped there two years ago on a sunny day the bottom of the lake was visible way out from the bank.

I'm not so sure how they can lower Mammoth Dam that much with out completely draining the place.  Avarage depth is around 3-4', and I've never marked anything over 8'.

Wow. That's pretty shallow. If memory serves, it used to be a lot deeper. I caught a huge carp there about 14 years ago, in what I remember was about 8 feet of water.

Yeah 8' is all there is in mammoth. I wonder why they even bothered stocking trout there this year. If they draw it down that much it'll just be a mucky creek. That's the first I've heard of this. Looks like ill be doing a lot more walleye fishing this winter...

I stopped at the lower lake at Twin Lakes to check it out to-day,the water level was about 6' from shore & dropping & the dying weeds smelled bad. The part to the left of the boat house is already very low with the dock mostly out of the water. As the level drops it is going to be intresting to see how many rod & reel outfits are found. I did fairly well on the upper lake as did the 2 guys with me,only 3 or 4 others fishing.  sam

How are they drawing these lakes down so much? there are only spillways to my knowledge, how can they pull water out?

at the bottom of hill near the lower lake spillway there is that brick shed, i guess there must be a valve to control the release of water.  at the very bottom of the spillway near the road/bridge you'll see a big pipe opening, thats where the water comes out and flows into the creek below the lake.  there must be fish somewhere in that small stream that flows out of the lake.

At Mammoth, the valve is by the bridge near the spillway. sam

Judging from what you guys wrote, it does seem like alot of water to draw down. One thing for sure, it will greatly concentrate the fish. Hope they survive.

I am assuming it will be drawn down till early spring? Did they say for how long for either lake?

I think they are on the same time frame for the weed plan as Donegal and High Point, well atleast Donegal.  They said Donegal will be back to normal pool by opening day so I'd say it could be safe to assume the same for Twin and Mammoth.

With all the rain in the forecast. Maybe high water flow in the creek will carry some of that sediment out of mammoth. Nothin like a deep washed out creek channel to open up new food sources just before winter. It could help the fish deal with the cold weather too. Just trying to look on the positive side, since mammoth is pretty much @#$%ed.
