Virginia fishermen recieve award from fish comm.

Does anybody know what kind of bait these guys were using? They caught 29 steelhead and 2 brown trout in 1 outing.

Hmmm! They were fishing nursery waters, and took 3 times the legal limit. Think maybe there's just a chance that they might have used illegal methods too?

The reports I read said they were using "unlawful devices." Knowing how small Trout Run is, I'd guess they were using some sort of net -- probably a seine.

A new law was just passed raising the penalty on this kind of stuff. It used to be a summary charge with a $200 maximum fine / 90 day imprisonment, now it's a misdemeanor charge with a penalty as high as $5000 plus "fish replacement cost" / 2 years imprisonment. Gov. Corbett says its designed to reduce commercial poaching, but I fear more than a few poor uninformed fishers are going to get stung too. Press release on the new law: http://fishandboat.com/ne...nti-poaching.htm

From what I read they were using a Russian fishing rod, commonly called a  long handled net.

Come to think of it, I haven't seen my Russian friend from Four Mile and Seven Mile creeks in a couple of years. Maybe he moved to the west side.  He wore an overcoat and short snow boots, and fished with a large net and a one ounce rooster tail. Amazing that he could catch fish by simply letting the lure sit on the creek bottom. And he would hook and net the steelhead in one motion.  Very efficient fisherman.

Saw a guy on Elk early 80s , He used a huge treble 30# line or so with a piece of yellow balloon on one of the hooks for a locator. I must have caught 3 or 4 on my minnows while he was jerking away madly at the mass of out in front of him. I think I asked if his Pixbrg Cricket was giving him trouble.  He left soon after.

    A couple questions:
    1. Is there an a link to article I can read about this.
    2. How many guys are we talking about here because you typed fisherMEN, and used the word "they".

I dont think there is any doubt that 3-5 guys could do this, catch and release. It just seems like if they caught and kept 31 fish thats at least 10 guys????

None of the articles I've come across contain much info. I'm surprised the PFBC hasn't put out a press release, but I haven't seen anything.

The story was also on TV news, and I think they said they  caught a guy in the creek at Trout Run  netting fish and passing them off to the two others.

I read an article somewhere that said one guy was netting them in the creek, passing them off to another guy who bagged them up stream side, who passed them off to a third guy running them up to their vehicle.

Team work in action. Would have been a lot cheaper to just get the right equipment , and enjoy the 3 1/2 fishing trips to accomplish their goals. I never could figure out why folks go to the extremes of risking heavy penalties for a trout ?

Just found this article!  We were fishing Trout Run last week and met some strange dudes from VA.  They said they were in Erie for work and they wanted to fish but didn't have a licence or equipment.  They were real interested in how we catch them and what we use!  The driver of the van left a group of about 4 of them and after we went to the lake bank the driver came back and picked the others up.  Individuals were drinking and acting a lil strange.  They were right on the stream and it was well after 10pm.  Glad they caught the crooks!!

Trout Run has always been a easy target for poachers. Years back we watched two guys net 3 fish and toss them in a trunk cooler and take off. At 5 am. you could not see much as far as license plates. No cell phones either so you could not do much. I'm sure this is a common act around that small creek...........pitiful !

My son and I were fishing the mouth on Wednesday afternoon when the PBFC came down looking for evidence.  THey had the boy wade though the nursery waters looking for nets, and lo and behold, he found one.  They also had him looking for net handlessince the nets they already had were broken.  He did not see any...but he though it was pretty cool walking amongst all of those fish.

    Exactly.

They're actually moving in the opposite direction as far as I can tell. They've improved parking, made viewing the fish easier, and put up a sign with some info on steelhead and their spawning habits.
