Cannonsburg Lake

I might have a few hours on Sunday to sneak away from the wife and get some fishing in, Anyhow Cannonsburg is probably the closest lake to me.
Anyone fishing it? doing any good? ...thought about taking the waders and hitting the outflow area and if no luck trying the lake for crappie and gils

Thanks,

Jeff

Don't forget about Little Chartiers Creek. Fished there about a month ago---there are still left over trout eager to eat.

Actually, I thought that Little Chartiers creek is the creek running thru the Lindenwood golf course. The fish commission called it by that name when they stocked.

The creek through Lindenwood is Linden Creek. Canonsburg Lake was stocked recently and the creek below it( Little Chartiers Creek) got some too as did Miller's Run in Cecil. It's a good time to catch a big bass at Canonsburg with a big chub freelined to swim hooked in the lips(real fresh) or hooked through the tail if they spent a few hours in the bucket. Everybody is all grown up now, don't be shy use a big chub for a big bass. It's worth the time trust me

    Fished today from 8-3
Started at the outflow and worked my way down to the bridge for about 2 hours with no luck, so I went up to the Lake and it was FISH ON
from about 10-3 Fished a few different spots on the lake targeting Crappie.
I ended up with 38 total fish 22 crappie including 10 keepers and 16 LargeMouth, including 2 19inchers which were released. The majority of the fish were caught on 2inch gulp under a float, also mixed in a few grub tails.
A lot of fisherman out today, weather was beautiful. Fun Day!

I thought Cannonsburg would be a waste of time a few weeks back.  So opted for Cross Creek, which turned out to be the waste of time...  I have been rather disgusted by Cannonsburg the last few times too.  It kind of feels like fishing the rivers.  I guess if they are stocking trout, the water quality is fine?

The lake looked fine to me, however in the morning walking the outflow,  parts of the edges of the creek bed were lined with Oil or gasoline, I was disturbed by that. I ofter hear people refer to it as a cesspool on this site? What do you mean disgusted by it? water quality?
I don't see it, never see any dead fish floating, I've kept trout from there before this is the first time I've kept crappie from there, fish looke fine after cleaning them. Any information out there to suggest the lake is dirty??

My last time, was below the dam.  The smell and foam floating in the water was very similar to that of the rivers.  There was a bunch of garbage in the stream too.  I have only heard of the water quality being bad, dating back to when I was a kid.  I can't say that I have ever seen anything in a report though.  I always figured, the PFBC would stop stocking with trout, if it was really bad.  I don't think crappie would be much of an issue.  They are kind of mid level on the food chain, so I would imagine they don't have as much toxins in them as bass, catfish or other larger predators.

Sunday, the biggest issue was the gasoline/oil on the edges of the creek coming down from the dam,..it wasn't overwhelming but it was enough to take notice. I have seen that foam you mentioned before, but this past weekend it wasn't present, the area by the dam actually looked pretty clear.
On a unrelated note I guess one of the bigger issues with the lake is the build up of sediment especially on the upper end. I wonder if they have any plans to dredge?

Personally I love canonsburg, the spillway has a ton of carp and during the summer that is what I normally go after. Never really smelled or noticed the water being disgusting.

Speaking to guys at the lake, they have also referred to Lindencreek as Little Chartiers...Although I have never fished it.

Little Chartiers flows into Canonsburg Lake and out the other side. Just downstream of the lake it flows into Chartiers Creek, which goes on to flow into the Ohio.

I think the confusion comes from the fact that before it flows into the lake, Little Chartiers runs alongside Linden Creek Rd.

When in doubt, the map at http://fishandboat.com/county.htm is pretty useful.

Jeff there are musky in there, at least below the spill way. Go there after a light rain and stand on the wall and look up against the dam. I have seen a few there.

The guy I spoke to said he believes there is well over 150 still in the lake, how true that is who knows. Here's the recent Biologist report, gizzard shad are becoming a problem here as well. Explains all the small crappie I've been catching. http://fishandboat.com/images/reports/2012bio/8x06_29canon.pdf
~note~ no mention of musky...but with the increasing amount of gizzard shad, they may start stocking again.

Fished the Upper end of the lake on Saturday after the lower end by the dam was no good only a few crappie and largemouth.

The upper end was loaded with crappie ~ favorite offering was a pink grub with chartreuse tail caught around 30 in 2 hours...missed many inbetween. All were small though! still fun and just nice to get out hike around and find new spots.

There are no muskie there anymore the stocking quit because of no returns. They can't swim up little chartiers because of the dam in hiedelburg. in '76 and '81 we caught muskie and saw plenty more sunning. That slowly dwindled and it's been muskie free for years. Dutch Fork draining and fish rescue and relocation is a fine example of no muskie after years of stocking. The big tiger i caught over the spillway there years ago was an upstream runner from the ohio no doubt.
Fished Canonsburg spillway Sunday caught a few nice bass although the biggest (bout 18 inch, 3.5 lbs give or take) was caught on someone's bobber...line snapped hardware all over him i snagged the orange wooden bobber, eagle claw 4 snelled attached to a big brass swivel plastered with splitshot nice fish if you are reading this and lost him. He's back in there minus the hardware lol. Lake is silted bad, has been for years. Nice place to get a fish fix if you have the addiction and live close but still not on my list if favorites to fish after all these years. But there are some really big bass in there. The serious guys gave up on it but there are a few really big fish around. The only thing i'd eat outta here is the winter stocked trout.

As far as NO MUSKY....I wouldn't say none, this guy I ran into fishing was telling me stories of catching them recently, ofcourse he could of been full of shiz, but he described a few places.
What time were you there Sunday, I fished the spillway for an hour or so around early afternoon. Nothing happening for me there. Missed something decent, looked like a catfish when it rolled over and The orange bobber wasn't mine lol, but walking around to different spots I prob found around 15 bobbers.

But I agree, I've only been fishing the lake because it's close, I live near Lebo it's a quick drive out 19. and I get my fix in. It's just fun to get out and fish.

I was there early morning...watched a great blue heron 30' from me nail a 9" largemouth in about 4 minutes after landing....and watched it wiggle in his throat as he swallowed it whole. Really cool being that close

Fished the upper part of the lake again lots of crappies and gills, no size. Still fun!!
