Help with Elk at Rick Road

Hey guys.  My 11 year old sister recently expressed interest in trying to catch her first steelhead at Rick Road (because we live one mile away from it).  I have not fished specifically for steelhead since I was 17 (5 years ago).  When I did, I just went to the mouth of the creeks and tossed cleos.  How would I go about getting her to catch fish right by the bridge?  I don't plan on fishing, but I do want her to hook into a chrome. Any advice on here or by PM would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks, guys.

There used to be a "steelhead basics" or something along those lines thread that was always near the top of the forum this time of year. Maybe try a search of this site. or maybe someone will be nice enough to find it for you. Lots of good info to look through on these forums, once you weed through all the silliness.

Water conditions are everything for beginners.  My advice is fish medium size fat head or emerald shiner minnows when the water is dropping after a rainstorm.   50 - 60cfs on the Walnut gauge should be prime for the area you want to fish on upper Elk.  Don't be afraid to walk downstream a little ways from the bridge, if your not having any luck at the big hole.  You can walk downstream a good ways without ever needing to cross the water there.

If you go in the type of water flow I just described, she will easily hook up on minnows.  Just make sure you get the weight right for the flow.  If the minnow is drifting through the current to fast and not staying down, then add a bb size split shot.  If it's still not drifting evenly with the current, add another.  If your getting hung up on the bottom and the minnow is lagging behind the current, then take off a bb size split shot.  You should be able to get it perfect with 1, 2, or 3 bb size weights depending on the water depth and flow.

The last two hours of daylight should be about the best time of the day this time of year.  Sometimes it can be a little to cold first thing in the morning, and they will turn on better later in the day especially the last hour before dark.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

It would be a memorable experience for your sister to hook up to an acrobatic steelhead. I would like to add a little advise however. At 11 your sister doesn't need any type of license to fish for steelies but at 22, if you so much as help her carry the equipment, you do. I would hate to see a perfect day spoiled by a fine. Good luck to your sister and have a ball.

Doesn't everyone?    The upper watersheds are only a few miles apart.

I've been doing it successfully for 6 years now, has never let me down once.     Was just up fishing Elk for two days (from 100cfs down to 40cfs on the Walnut gauge) after the six day hurricane blow out.  We hammered them in perfect water both days.  I can confirm that the same cfs numbers from the Walnut gauge held true after the Sandy blowout to what I like on Elk after a brief one day high water event.

I fished that area today for an hour or so and except for seeing a few fish at the iron bridge there did not seem to be a whole lot of fish.  Also fished most of the day in the route 5 area and saw a lot more action.  It probably would be a little harder foir a child to fish though.  Wherever you end up good luck and I really hope she hooks up.

Thanks.  Maybe the bridge area may not be the best spot.  I think we'll try 79 in Mckean first.

    From Fish Commission Site:

An adult who assists a child by casting or retrieving a fishing line or fishing rod is not required to possess a valid fishing license provided that the child remains within arms’ reach of the assisting adult and is actively involved in the fishing activity. An adult may assist a child by baiting hooks, removing fish from the line, netting fish, preparing the fishing rod for use and untangling the line without possessing a valid fishing license.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

Thanks for not assuming I was being a d!(k, cause I wasn't.  Just puzzled and thought maybe it was a typo.

That's kind of interesting that you do that and it holds true so often for you.  Honestly, at first glance, it seems like it may be more of an interesting coincidence than some sort of fundamental correllation, but either way, if it works, it works.

    I do the same .
it's not always a "sure thing" , but after some time  of regular trips and checking several creeks per trip, the gauge at  Da'Nut and Bandy Run  are  pretty good indicators of what to expect on all the creeks

I just figured it'd make more sense to use the Brandy gauge for Elk as opposed to the Walnut one, even after considering how close their upper reaches were to one another.  But that's pretty cool...another bit of info to help plan trips in the future.  Thanks dUUds.

Yeah walnut and elk are usually good indicators of eachother, although elk takes an extra half day or more to clear than walnut once rain is done.
Using those gauges for east side doesnt always work, especially 16/20 mile.  Ive experienced low and clear on one side and high and muddy on the other within the same day.

well... thats not fair at all.
The adult should have to possess a valid license if any fish are harvested.

Thanks. The section I read didn't have the part about setting the hook. That would be hard to establish anyway, IMO.
