the best way?

so while we're all staying safe from the storm of the centuryi thought maybe a little technue talk would help the time go by.
so if you hook a fish in a hole like the glide or clay or paradise, not a pocket in heavy water where 2 feet and they are into the flow, but a place where if they go over the lip you either have to chase, throw slack and hope or point the rod at them.
i haven't been into chasing in decades so convincing them they don't want to keep running down is importent for me.
anybody got an answer.
i'll post mine later.
people look at me like i'm an idiot but being a newb, ahemm cough cough ,  i am comfortable with that.

ok has anyone else tried this.
stand on your left foot holding your rod in your right hand while spinning clockwise screaming please stop please stop please stop.
this is of course for right handed people and southpaws would do it all backwards.

I fished this little hole in the UFZ for years that I always new had steelhead and people would just walk past.
It has fast water below and before the 2010 flood had this darn over hanging tree that made it difficult to fish, but boy did it hold steel.
For the first few times we would get our azz kicked by the fish . We tried all the usual tactics of keeping the rod low and even underwater but still they would dart under the tree and head to the heavy water.
Well something finally worked most of the time , once hooked just keep slight side pressure until you feel they may make the downstream turn then throw out as much slack line as you can. Usually they just turn back into the upstream current and swim back to the hole.
You may have to do this a few times and each time you throw slack move yourself up stream just a little unti you start to walk the fish above the hole. Once the fish gets above then you get below them and put the wood to them.

    i do exactly that when
    a) i am fishing a smaller pocket and they are only a few tail swipes away from heavy water.
    2) i really want to land fish in any situation.
first key being to let them use up their wild before they realize how much trouble they are in and then by throwing slack or at least dropping all rod pressure they don't know which way to fight.
i usually tighten up from a different angle once they've calmed back down.
#)confession i usually just give them a look at the rod butt as soon as they're hooked and are at their strongest so my landing % is a bity lower than it might be. like 75% less or so i would guess.

ps how did that post of mine get marked as helpful?

had to go shower and start to get ready for work.
my late night making sure all cheese is throughly glued in place.

as tuna wrote when i am fishing a longer pool i tip the rod straight down dipping the tip if the bottom allows.
fish can pull their heads down easier than up and since most holes have the bottom tilting up before they dump out into a rapid the downward pull has the fish practily running into a wall forcing them to turn over much like a swimmer coming to the end of their lane.
i have almost never seen another fisherman doing this and as i said the looks on people's faces are amazing.

That works fine even with fly line? With fly line I do the opposite I try to get it out of the water because of the drag and so I can keep tention on the fish but at the same time sometimes I need to walk a bit. Almost every time the flyline gets in the water and the fish takes off it creates a loop and almost always I lose the fish. But by far I'm not a pro so I might have to try your way if you do that with a fly rod.

    ug,
absolutely try to stay out of the water as much as possible.. Always try to walk back not forward..
I see it too often tension on the line and the fish walking the angler.. Sometimes it's un avoidable but other times it is time to gain control..

    With fly line:
the fish is going to have a fair amount out anyway and yes it will put a bow in the line.. Not as much as a tight pull from the angler. Pulling their head toward the surface is asking for trouble and when side pressure is not turning them one has only 3 choices:
    1:chase
    2:break
    3:strip line
    I chose #3
I work the drag (why it's important the knob is easy) in the beginning.. Lighten up in the beginning and use more of a palm, then tighten when you "think" you have control..

Nothing is ever the best way and what ever works in any situation doesn't always work in others..
I comes down to experience, tips and what works for you..
EDIT > It always helps to learn small sections of water to know lies, takes ,fights and landing..
Once you know it's time to move on then always keep moving.

    P.S.
Glad they let me out early..
    Tied a bunch today !!

    P.S.
     HAPPY BIRTHDAY ;

i have been using this method for quite awhile. im not always successful at landing the fish, however, i find i usually have more room to fish afterwards. people usually back away slowly afterwards.

I have found, after years of trying different methods of catching and landing most fishes on the Sr, a method that works very well-
first- place yourself well below the fish ,preferably after its hooked
Second -as the fish nears drop your rod no matter where you are
Third- and most important-   reach down quickly and grab it by the ears- they go into immediate limbo and are easy to handle.

BTW- also works on fishes just swimming by real slow.

    Nice post!
I like to joke that (what Tuna said) some of these tec. work 80% of the time so dont blame me if you hit the 20% (har-har)
Its also very hard for the new guys to throw slack, etc.. on the occasional fish. Works best when your into'm good and can afford to have fun and try something different. So if you hit the 20% its no big deal :)

    Randy,

AS 2B points out, throwing slack also get easier when advancing age makes the prospect of a chase and maybe fall with bruised or broken limbs less attractive! Even if it is only a 50-50 proposition it beats the aches for a couple of weeks, or longer if there is a fracture involved.  Maybe it would be different if I was eating them, but I'm not killing myself for a cell phone picture!

    13,
Yup, I know longer run, just walk fast :)
I always tell my guest's that NO fish is worth getting hurt or wet over.
W/ the tip low, I always reccommend to keep it low until the fish is ready, then 1 final lift into the net or 1 final pull to the beach.  If we rush it, the head breaks the surface and they run or thrash, many times fish off.

on the other hand i find when i set the hook, immediately give max pressure, showing the fish my rod butt, it gets quite interesting in a hurry.
of course i don't land a high % of the biggest fish i hook using this tech.

I wanted to revive this as I read alot on Randy's page and have been able to try out a few.  Keeping the rod tip down and not pulling the fish up has worked great for me. I turned a few fish back from the fast water keeping the tip down ,  even in the water a few times, and giving gentle pressure and even a little slack.   I also learned the past few trips out that it's OK to put some backbone into it.   Thanks Randy for a great read.

Clint also when you have a fished stopped just above rough water try slowly walking upriver, don't reel as that seems to iritate them, keeping the rod low with a bow in it.
The fish will usually follow along.
When you feel it put on the brakes stop, ease up just a tad and give it a sec then try again.
This can gain you a little space if the fish decides to bolt down again.
Also a little zig zag action will get them confused as to which way to resist.

Use that method when 'landing' most all the time-even though I dont actually land them anymore but keepem in the very low waters edge as much as possible.
Have told many newbie guys when the fish is holding and not coming in for them-'keep the rod still and just back up slowly'- the fish generally just follow and slip to the waters edge before they realize whats up.
Personally whenever am fishing  kinda try and locate a landing area that suits my style before even casting and try and manage the fish to that spot.
Frankly dont fish some  waters cause there does not appear to be a decent landing Zone-aint playin one half to death cause I didnt do my homework- also refuse to use a net anymore-personal restrictions -lol- it aint bout the numbers anymore.

Good techniques.  Here's leading one on up out of the tail of the Barrel, and backing a striper.
I must say though, doing some maintenance and tying new leaders on, I noticed I'm both a moron and blind. I've been using micro-swivels with a tag  to attach shot to, as it tends not to take the whole rig if you hang up, just pulls the #7 I usually have on there off.  I gave my knots some testing and they failed a lot of the time if I tied them with the normal 10 seconds I spend on them. I use what's called a Pitzen knot, which is a modified sliding loop that is quick to tie and 100% strength if tied right. Weak as a baby, wrong. When I've been tightening them, I've not used enough lubrication and not seated them well enough on the tiny swivel ring.  I generally take more time at the fly. Problem is, I've been losing the whole tippet. From now on, I'll be far more diligent. Been getting sloppy and negligent.  My landing ratio has been going down. Now I know why.  Duh.

I'm with ya on that fichy.
I know probably half the fish I lose are because of my lack of maintinence.
I tend to use a tippet until it breaks.
Play a fish or 2 and check how chewed up your leader is.
Now with no close up focus since the cataract surgery and 1 eye getting cloudy, like seeing ghosts in fog, my knot tying has suffered, even with dry warm hands.
I may just go back to tying flies on light wire hooks that bend out after a few minutes.
I did that for a few years before health issues kept me on the side lines for 4 or 5 years.
When I came back last year a bit and moreso this year landing seemed like a priority again.
I really like the first 30 seconds or so much more than the working them to a release point anyway.
It is nice to know you can still do it if you have to though.
