they stopped stocking coho sometime ago...8-10(?) years ago
But when did the stop stocking steelhead?

They reduced numbers from the  peak years of    the late 90's/every '00s of 2.3mil smolts a year
'bout the same time they  diverted a substantial amount from Elk and Walnut  to the  east side .
so it was like a double whammy to Elk and Da'Nut

but they still dump truck loads of smolts in the creeks every Spring

If you wanted "natural". There'd be nothing but Lakers, and maybe Atlantics in lake Erie and it's tribs.

Not sure where you get your numbers from, but according to PFBC they are stocking about just as many smolts in Elk as they ever have.   Here are the smolt stocking numbers for Elk back to 1992:

    Year  Species              Lifestage                  # Stocked
    1992 Rainbow Trout - Steelhead Fingerling 258,000
    1993 Rainbow Trout - Steelhead Fingerling 188,000
    1994 Rainbow Trout - Steelhead Fingerling 144,500
    1995 Rainbow Trout - Steelhead Fingerling 180,000
    1996 Rainbow Trout - Steelhead Fingerling 5,000
    1997 Rainbow Trout - Steelhead Fingerling 210,000
    1998 Rainbow Trout - Steelhead Fingerling 199,730
    2000 Rainbow Trout - Steelhead Fingerling 221,740
    2001 Rainbow Trout - Steelhead Fingerling 275,000
    2002 Rainbow Trout - Steelhead Yearling 249,987
    2003 Rainbow Trout - Steelhead Yearling 172,750
    2004 Rainbow Trout - Steelhead Yearling 261,900
    2005 Rainbow Trout - Steelhead Yearling 261,090
    2006 Rainbow Trout - Steelhead Yearling 264,590
    2007 Rainbow Trout - Steelhead Yearling 252,720
    2008 Rainbow Trout - Steelhead Yearling 274,311
    2009 Rainbow Trout - Steelhead Yearling 275,400
    2010 Rainbow Trout - Steelhead Yearling 246,624
    2011 Rainbow Trout - Steelhead Yearling 247,050

I would vote rumor on this, and wouldn't believe everything you're told at the lake.  Look at the Elk creek stocking numbers that I posted directly from the PFBC, looks like they have been stocking close to the same numbers in Elk that they did 10 and 20 years ago.

I think the statement that steelhead fishing has declined yearly is not true either.  Almost everyone agrees that we had more fish last year than the two years before it.  Also it hasn't gradually declined, four years ago Elk was loaded from top to bottom almost every nice hole and run was black with fish in November.  Then the following year (3 years ago) it just crashed, nothing slow or gradual about it.

With the lake temps being warmer this year and it not even being November yet, I'd at least wait another month before saying the fishing is down.  Based on reports from out in the lake this year, there is still a chance of an Epic run.

Guess one needs to know exactly what was told him. ( Truth ) The PF&BC stopped stocking Coho. ( Truth ) The fishing, for COHO has  declined yearly to obvious lower return numbers. Although the latter is only semi truth. The COHO fishing, didn't slowly decline yearly. It declined dramatatically, and has remained dramatically low since.

slayer, no one mentioned less steel stocking, it was meant as since the coho are basically gone, the steel are picking up the slack, this person that told us was saying, as mentioned above, these species are a schooling fish and he believed with the decline of coho, which generally ran early, the steel are now running later,on their own, this was one mans opinion, not gospel,no different than all other opinions on why the number decline

alot of people didnt realize which species of fish they were actually catching for so many years, but now that its 99% Steelhead it seems as tho there is not many fish but reality is the Steelhead are still here in huge numbers but without the support group of Coho Salmon. These 2 species coexisted brilliantly together making for some great memories in Erie,Pa.
I also feel there is some residency return issues for some bodies of water for reasons unknown

    Genie,

Click on the link at the bottom of Slayer's list. Select county ( Erie ), select year from ( 1992 ), then select species ( Rainbow/Steelhead ). Hit go & there you are.

Poor imprinting has been occurring. Streams have chemistry changes due to new waste water/storm water rectifications . Smolts have been stocked too close to the lake, and predation have also been reasons given. 3CU raceways have experienced weather related problems over the past few years.
