Harmarville Dam

Does anyone fish right near the Harmarville dam? I was crossing the bridge on the turnpike today and seen a person fishing there. Is it any good. I would like to try it. Its about an hour ride for me. Just wondering if it's worth it. I'm not asking for anyones secret spots. I just have never fished the Alleghaney before.

BlueLagoon pretty much hit the nail on the head. I usually try and fish jigs very slow off the bottom. Lots of snags but its paid off in the past. Also, if you bring waders you can wade out to the islands and fish all the little inlets and coves around them.  Can get closer to deeper water as well out there and makes for a fun half day or so trip. That pool has a decent (for the pittsburgh area anyways) population of musky. Been trying for them all summer and havent gotten anything but know of multiple people who landed a few. My buddy got a nice 40 incher a few feeks ago just downriver from that spot. Good luck and post a report if you go!

Ok Thanks. Not sure if i'll get up there anytime soon. Hope to but always so busy. I am from Westmoreland county. I am used to fishing Donegal, Greenlick, Bridgeport and Kooser lake. I live a mile from the Yough river but never had much luck in the river.  When I was a kid, I lived in Elizabeth right near RT.51. I always caught carp, catfish and a few bass in the Mon. That was about the only success i've ever had in a river. I guess i'll have to get up there and give it a try. One more thing. I plan on having a boat next year. Are there any close access points up there near the dam. I'm not real familiar with the Harmarville-Springdale area.

Speaking of Muskies. A local Sunday paper out here called The Herald Standard (not sure if you can look it up online) had an article about a really nice Musky caught a few miles from my house. I believe it was 46 and some odd inches. Can't remember the weight. It had some girth to it. I don't target them but any of you guys that target Muskies, give the Yough River a try from Connellsville in Fayette county to the West Newton area. I know of guys that have pulled some nice ones out of this river. I was fishing a little cove near Mckeesport when a large musky came right in made a pass and swam back out into the main part of the river.

Theres a nice pfbc boat launch just downriver from the dam across from funfest. Only thing is they take out the dock around this time which makes it almost impossible to launch there. Be carefull too its very shallow in that channel between the island and mainland. Head downriver from the launch and loop around the island up to the dam that way. A lot of nice water on that stretch. Ive never tried the yough for skies have been pretty much fishing em all year down south on the mon. Ive heard the area you mentioned is great for em though. Nows the time to target em if you want the big guns!
