I have used a furled leader the last two seasons steelheading. I use a small Blackbird swivel to which I attach my tippet. I nail knot the furled leader to the fly line. My usual rod is a 10' 7-wt. I make my own furled leaders, and used them this year fishing dry flies, with moderate success. In the past when fishing Erie, I would tie my own tapered leaders, usually out of Maxima using double surgeon's knots to taper the different sized leader material. They were fine, but I like the simplicity of the furled leader. I rarely use a float, I have gotten to where I can weave in a colored indicator into the furled leader. I don't go through as much tippet as I used to before the furled leaders. I am going to experiment with P-line this season as tippet, but normally I use Frog Hair, both in mono and flourocarbon.
