Elk Creek in Field and Stream Magazine 10/2012

from page 80:
"For a hairy five minutes I gently keep up the pressure as the ticked-off trout shoots from one end of the pool to the other.  If it breaks into one of the 6-inch riffles above or below, I'll lose it.  Eventually, Kazulen sloshes into the hole and takes a wild swing with the net.  What he comes up with is the biggest steelhead I've ever landed - a glistening female pushing 18 pounds."

Anyone else read the article then look at the picture and think they might be off a little bit with the weight?

I believe it. Pictures don't always do some of these fish justice. The same fish held close to the body or with the arms extended out towards the camera can make a huge difference. Either way a nice fish

He just said it was "pushing" 18 pounds. He didn't say how hard of a push it would take

Here's the 20 lb. 3 oz. State record:

    April 17, 2001
A 20-lb., 3-oz. steelhead trout caught April 1 has been named the newPennsylvania state recordfor the species. No fooling.
The 36 ½ -inch fish was landed by Corey T. Brown, 26, of Osterburg while fly fishing in Walnut Creek, Erie County.
The male steelhead boasted a girth of 21 ½ inches. Brown’s record-setter broke the previous mark of 19 lbs., 2 oz. by more than a pound. The former record was set in 1992 by Brian Daugherty of East Freedom with a Lake Erie steelhead.

No way! My guess is 12 lb at the most.I pulled a 12lb 6oz 32 1/2 inch hen out of that same hole two years ago.Needless to say she is on the wall.I caught her on a yellow stone fly, took her to Poor Richards and sent it to Links Taxidermy.

I caught one last year that had to have been 15lb and someone stole it and the other fish on my stringer.

Yep. You guys beat me up pretty badly over that. LOL! It wasn't too long after I joined the site and didn't "get" your sense of humor at the time. I was really upset that someone would steal my fish. Everyone on here acted like they either didn't believe it or that I was over reacting. Then came the green neoprene wader and yellow rope jokes (which I didn't get) and eventually the moderator just erased the whole thread. LOL! I'm glad you guys are my friends now because you are all pretty formidable as enemies...

That fish is all of 10-11 lbs. And thats a generous estimate.

I got one in 2004 that was 34" long 21" girth and weighed in at 17.4 lbs. On a certified scale when there was a PoorRichards East side shop.

Either way thats a nice fish but not even close to 18lbs.

I'd love to catch an 18 lb one! Normally, I get the average day in - day out Erie Tribs steelhead, not that I'm complaining about it.

What a crummy article. If they didn't have anything good to say, why say anything at all. They certainly beat up one of the greatest fisheries on earth. I guess this just shows the quality of the magazine.  The other side, guess we won't have as many guests on our streams in Erie County.

Im sorry to admit that it was me that stole your fish man, sorry, but I had to eat and the one I coddled off of my stringer was only going to get me a 7 lb fillet smoked when I traded it.  It was a haul up over that hill w/ it, but I feel it was justified.

If you wanna fist-fight over it, PM me and ill be glad to meet you at a neutral location.  You bring one friend and ill bring mine, but if they jump in they are getting garotte choked mafia style with a yellow stringer.
