Kayak rentals
My girlfriend and I are looking to rent a few kayaks and have a nice relaxing day off on monday. It looks like a few of the notable kayak rental places (north park, moraine) are closed during the weekdays now. The kayak rental at the confluence is open, but neither of us has a whole lot of experience on kayaks, so that probably would not be a wise choice. Are there any places still open during the weekdays?

Ohiopyle/Confluence dude. You don't need to do the high rapid areas below the falls. They have a few different stretchs. Some have barely any rapids, enough to make it fun. Guessing the fishing should be pretty good right now there too. Even renting duckies or shredders below the falls is fun for two people. Not really relaxing, but fun. I wouldn't take fishing gear. Hazelbaker's near Perryopolis. http://www.hazelbakerscanoes.com/ Yough Outfitters in West Newton. http://www.searchmagnetlocal.com/3280/ Kayaking lakes is kind of boring... Especially if fishing isn't your primary focus.

Thanks guys for the input I've kicked around the idea about trying the Yough, but I'm kind of conservative when it comes to safety. I have a minimal amount of kayaking/canoeing experience, and she has none (to my knowledge). She is a strong swimmer and I'm decent enough. I just worry that if something happens, we will be out there on our own with not a whole lot of river traffic. Conversely, I worry that there are too many nutcases in boats in downtown Pittsburgh. Are any of these fears justified

In my experience I have done hazelbakers canoe rides multiple times and find it very safe and fun. The Yough in that area is shallow in many areas and populated by other kayakers/floaters. Very relaxing ride down the river as far as I was concerned.

If you do the Hazlebaker area, you should be in good shape. The current there (check the forecast of course), isn't very strong at a normal end of Summer early Fall stage. They're going to be recreational kayaks, which are very stable (hard to tip) and easy to bail out of, if you are somehow able to flip over. That said, the first few minutes after you get in and get used to, is going to feel like you are going to tip over. It takes about 5 minutes tops, for that to go away. Don't try eskimo rolling in them, and you'll be fine. I'm guessing that you'll wear a life vest where ever you go. If so, I don't think the Yough in that stretch is any more dangerous than a lake. If you plan on being next to her the whole time and scared about her ability to bail from a kayak, rent a canoe. There are many families with young kids that have no issues. Easier to get out of, and you'll be right there for her if she is feeling scared. Or, from the sounds of it, she'll be there for you... Also a bit easier to carry fishing gear and a cooler / junk bag ect. There is a nice pool right at the Hazelbaker property. You might be able to take kayaks out early to test them in the water right by their property. Call them, explain your concerns and see if they'll let you take a test run. FYI - My buddy just went with his 5 year old and 8 year old. They took out canoes. He mentioned there is a road/bridge out in the area. Not sure which one, but said that it added 20 minutes to his drive. Might want to question them about that if you call.

If you do go downtown, I think KP has a place in Millvale. It's an easy ride through the back channel of Herr's island.

not that many boaters on water on monday. they need to work to pay for that expensive gas they burn on the weekend. not much commercial river traffic on allegheny. why not contact the rental place and talk to them. i believe that they give safety instructions as well as operating. check the weather and have a great time. 62 high and partially sunny for monday. if its 62 in the burgh, it will be cooler in the countryside.
