Confusion about charters

As of late my girlfriend and I have been looking to possibly go on a charter next year possibly in Erie, now the confusion comes about from the whole rates scale.  When they say something like "1-4 Person(s)..................$500" does that mean it's $500 a person or if it's 4 people it's $500 total?  Any info/pm are greatly welcome.

That is definitely $500 total for a full day private charter.  So if you have 2 people it would be $250 a piece, and 4 people would be $125 a piece.

I've never been on an Erie charter before, but I've taken private full day charters out for yellow fin tuna at $800 total up to 5 people, and on a really sweet boat.  So there is no way any Erie private charter could ever cost $2,000 for 4 people.

Not sure how it works in Erie, but with charters a tip is also usually customary if the captain works his butt off or the catch is good.  Also outside of Erie, I've heard horror stories of captains showing up half drunk and having little or no catch at all, so do your research first.  I'm sure there is plenty of valuable charter information on this site, the search page is your friend!

An alternative to charters are Head boats, aka: Party boats. You can go out for around $30 for the day, but you have to share the boat with 30 other people. You get the same service as you do with the charters. They have head boats on Lake Erie for Walleye & Perch outings.

Tipping the Captain and 1st Mate is usual and customary wherever one fishes when you believe they have done a particularly good job. There are some that firmly believe the Cap and 1st Mate don't deserve a tip, but when one considers all of the Captains' cost in taking out some peeps for 4-24 hours or more, he really does have alot of cost involved. If the 1st Mate has gone above and beyond, he also deserves a tip. Peeps only see the big picture, the total amount of cash being paid. The 1st Mate works for minimum wage at best from all of the ones I've spoken to and I believe they were very honest in their answers. As SteelSlayer77  has already stated,  when the Cap works his butt off or the catch is good, the Cap deserves a tip. Same thing with the 1st Mate. If he/she is out there making rigs for you, baiting your hook, taking the fish off the hook, getting you drinks/food [ even if it is yours], putting your fish in the cooler, they are working. Amount to tip has long been a question with anglers. What we have always done and require of everybody on our charter because there are those that try to get out of tipping with the logic that "they were already paid, why should I tip?  is that if a good job was done, tipping should be anywhere between 10% for a decent job to 20% for an exceptional one. If you think about it, a $600 trip divided between 6 people and a 20% tip only comes to $100 for the trip and $20 for the tip. We have always thought that was very affordable for 8 hours dock to dock. Even if the Captain was tipped, it's an still affordable trip. When we returned to the same Cap a year later, you can believe we got exceptional service, like the Cap bringing aboard 2 cases of beer for all to enjoy. They remember.

I,m sure he meant people and a tip is a nice gesture if you had a good time and the mate and captain were doing their job above and beyond expected.

That's why alot of captains won't book peeps. They stick with chocholate Santa Clauses.

Spoonchucker- very accurate about peeps in the traditional sense of the word and also about them being made right here in PA. Many peeps aren't aware of that bit of trivia. Even funnier when you posted the pic of a box of Peeps and then writing "Does this help" & writing the description "yellow marshmellows, etc... . Also loved your comment about Captains not booking peeps and sticking with chocolate Santa Clauses. BloodyHand - that was funny writing
" figuring it had something to do with ethanol". Really good thinking outside of the box! Although I'm sure many got it, John was the first to write "I'm sure he meant people" and that's exactly what was meant Bogeyjoker. Peeps is slang for people. The term has been around for a long time. The various comments on this thread were hilarious! ! ! Good one guys!
