North Park Lake

Has anyone been fishing there lately?  Was planning to try there on Friday to catch 10 or so bluegill to use for flathead bait.  Not looking for huge gills but I don't really want all tiny ones either.  Used to be able to this this in like an hour, but haven't fished it since they re-did it.  Anyone been there recently, and how has it been?

Everytime I tried to get flathead bait there this year I got nothing but tiny bluegill.  Im sure you can get some better sized bait, but you wont be able to get 10 good flathead bait sized gills in an hour.

Thanks for the info.  I got a good spot for some nice sized chubs, I'll probably try NP for the gills anyway, but I will now try to form a backup plan too.  Thanks again.

Id try marshall lake if you do try NP.  Ive fished that upper pond near the boat house and the main lake down closer to the **** with nothing to show for it. Good luck with the flats!

please give nplake time to recover.  it has been filled only a few months.  please give even the panfish time to grow and recoup.  please do not take anything from this recovering jewel.  please buy some catfish bait at the tackle shop (rather then going to wally world and****s)  there and help them get back on their feet after a year without a lake.

@ fruntz: Your post would be great if I had asked if everyone thinks that it is ok if I keep a few gills from NPL.  However, I didn't.  While I really appreciate your concern, I am talking about keeping several fish for bait, not having an Amish fish fry.  So, please, please, please spare me the lecture.  See, no matter how many times you type please you still sound like a . . .

don't want to get into a ****ing contest with you.  if you take a few and another and another take a few then it takes longer for the lake to recoup so that everyone can enjoy fishing there. perhaps now you understand my side of the equation.  i was not lecturing but putting out a request that you give the lake time to recoup so it will be good fishing for everyone in the near future. It is expected to be completely back to its original self in 5 years.
from following statement i'm reading that fish commission may not have stocked many if any  panfish.

Denny Tubbs, Fish and Boat education specialist, said some aquatic weeds survived in the creek channels while the lake was drained. More will enter through the tributaries. The lake is expected to be naturally repopulated with the same weeds it contained before.
Bug life -- the all-important base of the lake's biology -- will also repopulate itself without human intervention. Baitfish, including various minnows, suckers, chubs, crayfish and amphibians, as well as other animals are expected to enter the lake through the tribs.

I understood your side of the equation perfectly from the outset.  You have made only 137 posts in 12 years, but found it importantant enough to now have made 2 posts (1 over a year ago) "enlightening" me as to the evils of taking bait from NPL, something I have been doing as long as I can remember.  And if you don't want to get in a pizzing match, why post an article supporting your opinion?

I get it, you don't think people should keep gills from NPL yet.  Thanks, now I can sleep tonight.

I was walking my dog along the lake a few nights ago and there were a bunch of small fish surfacing all over.  I DO NOT know for sure if they were bluegill or what they were but there were a lot of them.

I will start off by saying I haven't contributed much to this site because for one, I don't get out as much as i'd like so I don't have a lot to offer. Second, i'm still learning. I used to always fish for panfish and trout only mainly because i'd rather catch fish all day than go out and get skunked. I agree with Fruntz. Many of us really enjoy fishing for and catching panfish. I know alot of guys look down on panfish as nothing but flathead bait. but some people enjoy them. Also, if you take all the panfish you want, then sooner than later, it will affect the fish that feed on them.
