How close is too close?

I dont know if there is a reg, an unwritten rule, an unspoken courtesy, or nothing at all in place. Here's my question.

I've been fishing (in my yak) an area frequented by jet skis. For the most part, we can keep pretty clear of each other...and both of us get our fun in. The last week or so, there has been a small group of them that I feel are getting WAY too close to me...going way too fast...to be that close. I feel like if I can hit you with my buzzbait (30+ yds) your invading my space, and jeopardizing both of our safety.

How close is too close? Am I off base here?

    It is illegal to.

Operate a watercraft in a reckless, negligent or dangerous manner. Boats must be operated at a rate of speed that does not endanger the life or property of any person.
  • Operate a boat at greater than slow, no wake speed within 100 feet of the shoreline, docks, launch ramps, swimmers or downed skiers, persons wading in the water, anchored, moored or drifting boats and floats. Slow, no-wake speed is the slowest possible speed of a motorboat required to maintain maneuverability so that the wake or wash created by the motorboat on the surface is minimal.

    Are you fishing PI bay?

    From PaFBC:
  • Boats are limited to slow, no wake speed in the following areas:
    - Through the Erie Harbor Entrance between the North Pierhead Light (foghorn) and Inter Range Tower.
    - In the area adjacent to the Erie Public Dock, extending from the Erie Sand and Gravel Company on the west to the Continental Grain Company piers on the east. The restricted area will include the Canal Basin and extend northward to the harbor line.
    - Within the boundaries of Presque Isle State Park, including the waters of Marina and Misery Bays and the waters along the bay and lake shore for a distance of 500 feet from the shore.

My float tube is blaze orange for that very reason... too many boats getting way to close for comfort.

Slick, I see your Forester every time I go down to the peninsula.  I have been fishing just a few parking lots up from where I see you.  I see the same jet skis you do and I agree with you that they are a little too close.  If it were not for the buoy near me, they'd probably run me down.  However, to be fair, I feel the need to say that it's not just them.  Some of the recreational yakers have come pretty close, too.  They don't make waves, but a couple have cruised right over my line and one even hit my popper with her paddle.

    Bigger is better.

HAHAHA! I'm sure you could. BH swears by your jedi-like skill with a cleo! I was just playin' anyway. Like you said, it is fun to think about, and it would be funny to see someone else do it, but wouldn't want to pull the cleo loaded trigger myself! I do agree that someone needs to teach them the rules if they aren't morally mature enough to figure it out for themselves. Aside from being against the law, it is rude as all get-out. Jet skiers do the same thing to me on the river. Drives me nuts. I've thought about sending a 1/4oz jig at a few of them myself. LOL!

As others have written , there are regs and I understand the reason why regs are needed, but one would think common courtesy should kick in.

But so many people have their craniums permanently engulfed by thier colons.
Obviously their parents didn't beat them enough as children.

That was kinda my idea...if....like myself, if ya didnt know the regs....ud think theyd have the common sense to steer a little more clear. I think Rap said a few years back "common sense is uncommon"

Make a few copies of the regs and tuck one behind the windshield wiper of each wave runner trailer you see.  I'm guessing that would mean hitting a ton of launches.  Maybe try to figure out what launch they are taking off from, and hit the ones there.  If it is from one of the marinas, contact them to make an announcement.  If that all fails, contact the PFBC.  I'm guessing like your local police, if a complaint is made, they will follow up on it.  Have them on speed dial while you are out.  It is one thing when they are just being annoying, another when it comes to the safety of others.
