I'm 99.9% sure the blast of the gun and the splashing water will deter that dog from continuing the chase.

Im sorry but I really dont think i need a gun to take on a dog...Im pretty sure knowing my temper, if that thing was comming anywhere near my family id beat its head in till theres nothing left. Im praying for the day a pitbull comes after me or my family...there wont be much left when i get done. Irresponisble dog owners are the ones at fault. Some people just shouldnt own a dog...

I have experienced this ( what you have described in yer post ) First Hand.  Long story short ....Had a nasty Doberman claw its way over a fence to come chase me. Since there was no place for me to go , I stood my ground. Had pepper spray in hand and let him have it , The Whole Can ,which did not do much seeing that his whole objective was to eat me. The spray did not work and I had to rely on my hands, feet, elbows, knees, and teeth, yes teeth, I bit back. When it was all said and done with the dog lay lifeless and me full of blood and sweat. I proceeded to drag the dog back to the yard where it came from and threw it back over the fence. A neighbor across the street had already called 911 and as I pitched the dog over the fence the cops asked me what happened. The owner of the dog was hysterical and wanted to be compensated for the loss of her dog. I said after you pay for my medical and dental bills Ill see what I can do ....NOT .  I ended up with a broken front tooth busted off at the gum line and 38 stitches.  I will not hesitate to kill any dog again be it 10 lbs or 110 lbs. if is is threatening any human being. Leash laws are there to protect. Plain and simple.

NOW  IN RESPONSE TO SLICK'S FIASCO  I only wish I was there to get the video. Im glad you are not physically hurt in any way but Id be willing to bet you may have soiled yerself a little.  Maybe ??  A great story nonetheless.

I got away unscathed...the dog got away unscathed. Happy ending to a scary and hysterical story. I feel like I made the smartest move with the time alloted for me to prepare for it.

Had I been with one of my kids, or if he had actually caught me....I'd have fought him to the death with a fistful of cleos.

A few paddle whacks to the dome should deterr the mutt. Save the heat for the 2 leggers. Unless u have kids around.

You know what a kayak paddle to the head of an attacking dog would do...make him angry.  The only people that would love to take on a pitbull have never been bitten.   I have to agree with Loomis, he is 100% correct.  I had to break up two German Shorthairs that hated each other.  55 lbs.  hunting dog, that I knew since he was a pup:  took me 10 minutes to pry him off and out of my forearm.  To the people that are ready to "wrastle" with a dog, better think twice.  BTW, I can't think of a better time to carry than when fishing solo.  You probably only have $1000 worth of fishing gear on you and no one around???

Don't need a floating 9mm, use a lanyard.  Some pistols have the loop or a whole in the bottom of the gripframe ready for a lanyard.

I am actually afraid of aggressive dogs - who isn't? I was actually bit by a family member's Pitt bull when I was young. I would never hurt a dog and would always pick flight over fight. I love animals and have a great respect for life and all that happy stuff. If all parties walk away safe - it's a happy ending
However- if forced to- I would have certainly defended myself if it got the point where a fight was going down. I don't carry a firearm unless I am hunting. Probably never will carry a personal protection firearm. I always carry a substantial EDC blade. That would be horrific to have to use that in a defensive mode.
In all seriousness- You have to wonder about this animal's owner. Where in the world was this owner while this was all happening? What if this was not an adult in a kayak but a young child fishing the shoreline?
That owner needs a talking to.

haha ok i re read what i posted and it came off totally wrong and retarded to say the least. Im not literally praying for my family to get attacked my a pitbull...It was taken out of context. Meant to show my strong feeling towards what would happen if anything or anyone would be a threat to my family.

That commercial cracks me up every time...

My grandpap used to work for a gas company and had his share of run ins with dogs. His advice was to ram your hand down their throat and keep it there... I'll have to try that on my brother in laws chihuahua...

Reminds me of a short stint I did for a contractor of People's Gas a few years back, walking gas lines - residential and the long supply lines.  In training they kept talking about the "dog umbrellas" we would get to carry in the field.  Our company banned spray after some doosh hit a little lap dog in close proximity to some kids.

I'm picturing in my mind some contraption with strong metal bars and pointed edges that will stop a dog, and might actually be used as a weapon.  But nope, it was just a little Totes umbrella with the company's logo on it.  They showed us a video from the early 80's of some animal behavior specialist popping the umbrella open at charging dogs - pits, dobermans, shepherds - and the dogs turning and running with their tails between their legs.  I actually used it twice on dogs and it worked.  They weren't charging, but were coming at me snarling and walking sideways.

WAAAAAAAYYYYYYY long time ago when I was training to be a mail carrier, the supervisor was walking the route with me when a dog came out at us. I got the bag between the dog and us a gave it a spray and a kick from under the bag (martial artist--just a natural reflex I guess).  And the dog ran off. To this day I wonder if that was a set up for training. Kind of like the postal inspector pulling up behind me on my last week of probation and asking for "his mother's check."  Uh, no, sir. Where does you mother live? No sir I did not carry that route today. No sir you may not check my truck for her check. Have a nice day inspect... uh, sir.

Yeah that's it, stick your hand down a Pit's throat...anyone else see a problem with this tactic.  If the dog means business and is a breed that can administer whoopazz, you are going to get bit, unless you are Bruce Lee.  Pick which arm you want to give up and then go for the eyes.

Be extremely careful if you shoot a pet dog even if it is being aggressive.  Pepper spray is a much better defense and will not land you in nearly as much trouble.  You kill someone's pet you will be in some serious doggie do do.

The reason I know is my neighbor had a dog that was very aggressive and I threaten to harm it if I attacked me.  I wanted to be sure about that so I asked a cop if it would be OK to shoot or kill the animal if I felt threatened by it.  Basically he told me that unless the animals was literally ripping my throat out, I would be not be within my rights to kill it.  I could defend myself, hit it, spray it with pepper spray or restrain it, but killing was not an option unless as I said I or someone else was in immediate danger of being seriously injured or killed.  And then, it could turn into a legal nightmare because I would have to prove that should the owner sue me, so I better  have some teeth marks on my throat as evidence.

It's pretty sad that we live in a world where the lives of animals seem to be of equal importance to our own. I love dogs. Unfortunately, I've had to shoot a few of them. I live way back in the sticks and people like to drop their dogs off in my neck of the woods instead of sending them to the pound or whatnot. We always end up with a few strays hanging around. Most of them are harmless and I have found homes for a few of them, but there were others that were aggressive or looked sick that I had to take down. I didn't enjoy doing it, but it was the only way that made sense. One time a giant of a dog, must have had St. Bernard blood in it, wouldn't let anyone come out of our house. Every time someone went to the door, it was waiting with bared teeth. Warning shots did nothing to deter it. I eventually had to kill it with 00 buckshot. I know that I will never let a dog chew on me before I protect myself. I may not be worth much, but I'm worth more than a mean dog.

I was wondering if the dog was reported to the police.
This story reminded me of one about President Jimmy Carter. It was a long time ago but I seem to recall it was about him being attacked by a rabbit while he was out in a a canoe.
