Attacked by a dog....In my kayak

Sounds hard to believe...but it happened. I was fishing the shoreline near the yacht club this evening. I was sitting in about 2-3 ft of water. I was casting at an old pier, which is degraded into just a few big rocks in a straight line. I look up to cast at where the rockpile meets the shore...and there's a GIANT of a dog on shore looking at me. The dog looks looks like a cross between some kind of big hound and a great dane. As soon as we make eye contact the dog starts trotting down the rockpile toward me. I think...he'll stop at the end, no problem......WRONG.....this big duud launches off the pier into the water. The water is shallow enough the dog can run and bound. He's barking, snarling, and closing distance fast. At this point I took off paddling, he's 20 ft behind me....after a few panicked strokes I look back, he's 10 ft behind me....I really dig in and he's still closing...8ft....6ft....4ft...it was at about 4 ft I realize I'm paddling parallel to the shore. I pound the rutter right and head for deeper water....3ft.....2ft....3ft....5ft.....10ft...Praise the Lord, I'm losin him. I continued to gain space, with him swimming and still trying to eat me for another 100 yards. At some point after that, he turned and headed back to shore. I was too shook to even get my camera out....two jet skis stopped and watched it go down.

How many dudes you know that been chased in their kayak.....for 150 yards....

Everything went down so fast, there was no time to fight back. That big dog closed distance so fast it was ridiculous. I had decided if he caught me....he was gonna eat every treble in the box.

Did you call the cops and report the dog. He may end up killing a kid there. Shoot first and ask questions later.

    Thats nuts!
I doubt if I would have had it on in a kayak wit me, but I almost always carry my glock when I take my kids for a walk around our neighborhood and the reason is more for dogs than for people. I've never had an incident but i had two pitbulls eying us up and acting aggressive once and two other times dogs have come down off of their porches barking at us and the only thing that stopped them was the fact that they were chained. any dog takes a run at my kids I'm gonna put him down quick, fast,& in a hurry!
    Glad you got away OK!

Dang, I didn't know there were so many tough guys here, shooting dogs that "run up" on you and "seem" aggressive. Cops seem to have a problem with that lately, too....

agreed.....dude did the right thing by paddling his **** off....killing the dumb dog woulda caused more trouble than what its worth. Regardless...I still think its funny that the dog "chased" him for 150 yards

Maybe everyone should wait until they are chewwing on your their face?

If I see you on the stream, I'll swing a baseball bat 3" over your head.  Would you take no action until since the bat isn't hitting you?  Or would you react in one way or another?

I too will thouroughly venilate any dog (or any other creature) that wants to do bodily injury to me or my family.

If more people would shoot aggresive dogs before they breed, we could pleasantly cleanse the gene pool.  The owner, whether the dog is aggressive or not, must by law keep it on a leash.

Keep your dog on a leash and I promise it will not get lead poisoning.  Any dog of a leash or off it's property is in violation of the law...end of story. w_w.

If it has fins and gills, I'm there.

Yep....killing is always the answer, yepper.

Oh, and why would you have a ball bat on the stream?? DO they make good Steelhead rods or something??

The occasional  gun totin card carryin NRA member would stop a lot of BS we see goin on today.
My most recent Urban hero is that 70 year old guy who started poppin away at the two armed robbers last week.
Too bad that theater was full of folks unable to protect themselves.
Shoot any attacking dog before his rabid teeth can bite into ya. Cant imagine a cupla kids tryin to fish by that old pier.
Sad commentary that some think ya have to become a bleeding victim before taking action.
BTW - if I saw that show I woulda been hysterical .

Not really trying to be a tough guy (although I guess the tone of my post did make it sound that way), but I have been mauled by a dog before when I was a kid, NOT FUN!
I have no desire to just shoot someone's dog. However with that being said, if I'm just out walking on the sidewalk with my young boys, and the animal's behavior makes me feel like there is a real chance it is going to attack, I'm going to kill it before it has a chance to get a hold of one of my kids.  Like worm_waster said "Keep your dog on a leash and I promise it will not get lead poisoning."
Any way I don't want to hijack this thread.
Again, glad you got away Slickfish!

I own several guns, I hunt, and I have my concealed weapons permit. By no means am I anti-gun. However, I think some of the stances gun owners take, like this situation, strengthen the anti-gun activists position. To many dirt Harrys running around these days....I'm out of this debate...I hope I never meet some of you on the rivers, you scare the crap outta me.

It varies case to case with dog attacks, but I wouldn't be too quick to blast a dog that runs up on me, dogs show aggression to protect things, that's far from lounging at you and biting you.  Chances are if a dog is going to attack you it does it without provocation, so you will likely have to evade before you can shoot, knowing enough of the situation if it is a threat you can get away from without shooting.

....it simply sounds preposterous the way that some of you said it...

Im sorry but I really dont think i need a gun to take on a dog...Im pretty sure knowing my temper, if that thing was comming anywhere near my family id beat its head in till theres nothing left. Im praying for the day a pitbull comes after me or my family...there wont be much left when i get done. Irresponisble dog owners are the ones at fault. Some people just shouldnt own a dog...

I still think he should have snagged it with a Little Cleo. Then he could have used the dog as a trolling motor.

Why would someone allow an agressive acting dog to run free?  That's unlawful.  It's sorta silly to have a dog for "protection" when it isn't near you.
Noone that I know who carries would take any joy in killing anyones dog.
Please, some dog lover tell me.  Why would anyone own an agressive dog?  As a liability or simply a pain the butt to keep?
We are not speaking of a gun, which has no brain, and must be controlled by a human brain.  We are talking of an animal that makes decisions for itself, and is not always under control.w_w.

Don't sound like it was someones poodle. You are never sure of how you would handle the situation until it happens. You did a good job of avoiding the situation.I may have tried the same thing but given up and became offensive with the paddle as I am not a real fast rower. Maybe a few sound wops with the paddle to the la cabasa may have changed its tune. 3 feet is tooo close...WF
