flatheads
I know we and about everyone else uses live bait for flatheads, but has anyone caught one on liver while trying to catch channel cats? I think we might have hooked one or two tonight in the Mon in Morgantown tonight. Never felt a channel cat that heavy. Both times it(or they) broke the line. Just wondering. Thanks

I've only caught flats under 18" on liver. Have heard that wipers will eat liver on the bottom though.

I,ve caught several on liver. No big ones. I would try to target the flatheads there, if they are willing to eat liver they will eat a bluegill or sucker.

Yes, we've caught them on liver, and as previously said they were smaller ones... I think the biggest was around 24 or 25". Another culprit on the liver lines which are frequent breakoffs are turtles. We've gotten both snapper and soft shells while catfishing and they don't come in easy!

I spent a couple days along the Ohio River across from Louiville Ky at Falls Of The Ohio Nature Center. I was unable to fish however it has to be the premeer cat fishing place of anywhere I have seen. I watched cats (big ones) chasing bait in daylight. Not one but lots of them and fishermen from shore in rapids catching big cats. They said there are channel, flatheads and blues there. A fellow I was talking to that was setting up for a night fish said he got a pair of 30 lb-ers the night before. I saw cats chasing bait and rolling just below the rapids in daylight. Talked to clerk in Bass Pro Shop who said he catches them on rubber twister tails there .

FishinGuy I've only caught flats under 18" on liver. Have heard that wipers will eat liver on the bottom though. Here's a wiper/hybrid that took cut trout off the bottom, you can see the masticated bait in front of his nose. I have found that only small flats hit cut bait, liver, crawlers. The big ones seem to come from live bait.

I've caught plenty of big flats on half gills. That's probably overall our most productive bait.

I agree with FishinGuy, i have caught plenty of big flats on cut bluegill. you just need to locate the fish, thats the hard part. make sure you optimize your chances by using 3 rods at once if you can!
