new boat is running good.  Have to get the tilt and trim checked on the outboard but other than that no complaints.  This was the first turtle of the season i have some good spots lined up so there should be plenty more and i have seen some huge ones

Yum! One day I've gotta go after a few of them. I love turtle soup and to buy the meat costs an arm and a leg. 'Course, I guess if I'm not careful, catchin' 'em might cost me a finger or two, but with a splash of Sherry it would be worth it!

They sure do taste good.  Bagged another one this morning not as big as the first one but still a decent one.  I had 2 45lb steel leaders broke on two of my lines so i went bigger for tonight's lines

I did not like to set hooks because I think that you will kill the ones that are too small to cook,at least in my opinion. When you do set them, use a short line so that they don't have a chance to get tangled up & drown under water. I have found them like that & I would not advise eating one that was dead before you found it. When I did set lines I used parachute cord with an approx. 10" leader that I made out of 12 gauge copper electrical wire. Never lost any like that. They don't seem to be {leader shy}. I bought the chute line at G. M. in the boating section.it is pretty cheap.  sam

You can get paracord pretty cheap on Ebay. I've caught hundreds of snappers but I never did any good on hooks. I use traps and I hunt them. If you walk around ponds, many times you'll see them buried in the mud along the edge. Just reach down and grab them. I never did care for soup. I butcher them and cut all of the meat off of the bone, but first I let them set in a tub of water for 2 weeks, changing the water every day. I feed them bread while they are in there. Anyway, I cut the meat off and then I bread it and deep fry it. It's delicious. Every year I save up the meat until I have enough for a fry. Then I'll call my buds up and we'll go out and gig a bunch of frogs and then eat turtle and froglegs, drink beer and BS all night. This all reminds me, it's getting to be about that time of year...

I have been lucky i have not had any small ones on the hook.  I honestly dont see how they could eat it with the size of the hook that the fish commish requires.  I set my jugs at about 8 in the evening and i am back at 7 in the am.  I found some para cord that i had from some point in time (have no idea when though lol) and i attached that to my leaders, they are about 10 inches long.  I caught two more this morning with one being about 25lbs i will upload the pics tomorrow.  I let mine soak as well but only for about 2 days.  I change the water about every 3 hours, it is crazy how nasty the water gets in that time.  I havent decided if i am going to make soup or fry some up i have never had it fried so that will be new to me.  I have got 5 so far this season and just got permission to jug some really nice farm ponds so i think i will get to try both.  Now the frog legs make it sound even better i will have to learn to target them next lol.

I liked frying the smaller ones,{up to 15#} bigger than that they get pretty tough. We used to also fry the liver,I liked that because there are no thick veins in them. However the PFC at one time issued a warning against eating the liver,so I quit.   sam

I always figured snappers would carry a crapload of bad stuff seeing that they are basically bottom feeders. Are there eating restrictions on them? I catch them all the time around pittsburgh fishing for catfish and wanted to try makin some soup sometime. It seems like people eat these things like crazy with no limitations...im very hesitant to say the least haha

there are no limitations on eating them.  They do not retain PCB's or Mercury in their meat.  Make sure the one you catch are snappers and not softshell.  Softshell i believe are protected so make sure you keep the right one.  Snappers taste great when cooked right.  It is alot of work but i think it is well worth it.

That's a beautiful turtle eyeassassin! For those that can't trap/catch turtles for any reason, McGinnis Sisters sells turtle soup at certain times of the year and it is excellent! Lots of meat, etc... . Give them a call and don't hesitate to try it. I don't remember the exact cost, but from from what I remember, it was reasonable.
