We use 8's. Never had a problem but have used 6's with no problems as well.  Either tru turns or eagle claw Aberdeen's work well.

Size 8 red aberdeens are the best. Kinda hard to find though.

#4 tru turns work great for me. Rarely do i miss a hit and never have to dig the hook out. I double hook my shiners. I even use 4's on my sabiki rigs. Dont see why so many people believe a tiny hook is better. I hate cutting myself trying to get a swallowed hook back, so a few years ago i went with a bigger hook.

Man I must be out of the norm. I've been using Eagle Claw gold aberdeen hooks in size 2.

Last Sunday I had 2 hooks tied on the line, one about 8 inches above the weight, the second about 6 inches above the first. I tipped them with 2 shiners occasionally, but that can get to be a pain so mostly just used 1. I actually caught more doubles with only 1 shiner than 2. Yes, they were biting a bare gold hook.......
