Conemaugh Dam

I was planning on hitting the stream outflow of the Conemaugh Dam tuesday morning.  I'll be using minnows and some artificials.  Any thoughts on what I may catch?  I've never fished there but did fairly well last week below Loyalhanna Dam.  I caught one walleye(maybe saugeye), some smallmouth and rockbass, all on Rapalas or rooster tails.  I've always wanted to check out Conemaugh and finally going to give it a shot.

Plenty of smallies and even largemouth there. Also channels, some pike, walleye, sauger, and white bass.

What he said plus carp and trout. My son caught a real nice rainbow trout, approx 20 inches. I reached for the camera instead of the net. He lifted the trout up, it came off the hook, and swam away. My mistake. Never know for sure what you might catch.

Thanks guys.  Just got back.  I took 3 rookies out and we all caught some fish.  I let them use the minnows and I threw Rapalas.  Top fish was a heavy 18 inch largemouth.  It was definitely a mixed bag: smallmouth, largemouth, rockbass, walleyes, big crappies.  We had one small pike follow but wouldn't take it.  We managed about 30 fish before the bright sun drove us away.

lugnut522...I was thinking about hitting Conemaugh Dam.  Is there easy access to the stream outflow ?  In looking at google maps it seems like there is limited road access to the outflow area.  After your report, I am anxious to get out there.

It's not hard to get to just be ready for a little hike and a little steep terrain.  Also, the rocks are fairly treacherous.  We fished all the way down to the road and railroad double bridge area.  You'll know what I mean when you see it.  It was a tiring day fighting for balance and baking in the sun.

Thanks for the tips !  Based on your success it sounds like it was well worth the effort.  I will let you know how I do when I get out that way.

The actual basin of the dam is just down 2 paths from the top parking lot of the park.  Then you head down the road to the tunnelton rec area and there's a canoe launch at the bridges.  I've never fished between tunnelton launch and the basin but I have seen some fair catches of Pike, Bass and Crappie.
