Boat Lighting Problem - short

I have a lighting problem with my Suntracker Pontoon boat.  When I turn the lights on, it drains the battery (brand new) within an hour.  I have to have a short somewhere.

Can anyone give me any tips on finding this issue?  Is there anyone around in the area that would be interested in fixing this for a fee?   I keep my boat docked at Davis Hollow Marina.

I was planning on getting all new LED lights anyway – maybe that will fix the issue.
I really don’t feel like towing the boat home just to fix this, but maybe thats what I need to do.

Thanks

I had a short after wiring my new led trailer lights on. And after dealing with many wire issues over the years, if you can't find it simply by checking the wire, then your better off just throwing a new set of wires on. Its not very expensive and can save a lot of headaches IMO

You are correct jmay, you do have a short. If you can nor use a meter to find ittry feeling the wires after about 5 minutes,if you find one that is hot,you are close to finding the short.Another thing, with water and dampness in the boat I would check the switch and bulb connections, some times they rust and cause a short.Hope this helps you..  George (wb3fry)

Thanks for the help.  Thats what I was thinking.  Its a 2007 suntracker.  I have a fuse box.  If there was a short, you'd think I'd be blowing fuses.

    Battery is brand new.

I was out all day and had the fishfinder on, radio, etc.  No problems.    I turn the lights on, and was dead in an hour.  Fun being on the water at night, with no lights.  ha ha.

The boat is used.  I wonder if the light fuse blew before the previous owner plugged in a bigger fuse that isnt' blowing.

This just started happening though.  All last year we never had any issues with the battery or lights.

Run a new wire between the switch and the light you think is draining the battery.Should be easy on a pontoon.

You should be able to take even a cheap Radio Shack current meter and put it in series with each individual wire from each switch. I'm guessing that you'll find one circuit that draws a ton of current. Its obviously after a switch on one of the circuits or it would drain the battery without the lights on. I'll bet that you'll find a pinched wire somewhere, especially if all of the lights work. Can you turn on each switch one at a time and see the other lights get dim when you hit a certain switch? To drain a battery in an hour is a lot of draw. As previously stated, you may feel one wire that is warm or hot. Pontoons do not have complicated wiring, shouldn't be a big deal.

Look for the dim bulb and work your way back.
What have you mounted/re-attached with a screw or clamp?
What else is on light circuit?
If you have a volt meter in dash look at it without engine running, voltage should go up when running if it does not go up much have alternator tested.
Turn switches on and watch for voltage drop.

Yes you need to use led lights. They are better option for saving energy
