lake arthur walleye
i have been hearing for a few weeks now that the stocking of walleye in lake arthur will stop after next year. from what i hear this was said at a meeting at the castlewood rod n gun club by the fish com. the reason i guess is to stock fingerling in pymatuning instead of fry so they will cut out arthur completely to offset cost. if this happens it would be sad for the guys that live close or already have a far drive to fish arthur now they will have to drive even further to walleye fish. i know walleye fishing isn't the greatest there but it's not bad once you get on them. to completely cut the lake out of the stocking program just isn't right.

I'm surprised this thread isn't getting more traffic. My hope is that it is just a rumor, and noone wanting to feed into it? Not that Arthur is a walleye hotspot, and taking away it's top attraction. Getting a walleye or two, is by far my favorite "bonus fish" when fishing there. With how much use Arthur gets, I can't imagine anything being cut there, unless considered a complete waste. I have been seeing more reports, and personally getting into more eyes on Arthur in the last 2-3 years, than when I was hitting the lake much harder 5-10 years ago. Not sure if that is just coincidence, or if it is indicating the eyes are doing well. Hopefully this is just a rumor.

It would be devastating to us anglers who don't want to drive 2 hours to pyme or 2.5 to erie, or who don't have a erie capable boat. I love Moraine it's a nice short 45 minute drive from Pittsburgh, And when it's hot you can really run into some quality fish, I always fish for walleye! and whatever else bites is fine. If they stop stocking at Moraine that would be very disappointing to alot of people. And like you said catchn the walleye fishing isn't that great but if you get into them you're going to catch a few. I feel like the walleye population could be a lot better at Arthur and not sure why they're not as abundant as pyme, but let's hope a rumor is all that it is.

+1 I wish they'd completely eliminate channel cats for eyes, if they are looking for cost savings.

wow, 48,000 compared to 400,000 fingerling and 4 million fry....that's a shame.

Here are a couple of interesting tid-bits from the 2011 PFBC biologist survey regarding Arthur eyes. In general, fish populations appear to be stable with the catch rates for most species similar to previous surveys of Lake Arthur. Highlights of our sampling were the successes of our stocking programs; muskellunge, hybrid striped bass, walleye and channel catfish, all of which are anticipated to continue. Catch rates for walleye were fair with 91% of fish caught larger than legal size. The CPUE value for walleyes in Lake Arthur is slightly lower than we would like to see. Time permitting, we plan on returning in the fall to re-assess the walleye population with night electrofishing and trapnets. Read the full report here: http://www.fishandboat.com/images/reports/2011bio/1x07_29arthur.pdf Based on this, I would be inclined to believe that discontinuing the walleye stockings at Arthur is merely a rumor at this point.

I hope it is just a rumor but if it's not then i hope if anglers show enough interest in walleye fishing the lake they reconsider. I have several friends that belong to the castlewood rod n gun and they told me the fish com. was at a meeting there and said they would only be stocking 1 more year so if it's not a rumor they are not trying to keep it a secret i guess it wouldn't be to hard to get the facts.
