Loyalhanna lake

I'm looking for a lake to fish tomorrow evening on with my buddies boat who we just want to take on a quick test run to make sure the engine and everything is good to go. I was thinking loyalhanna lake I know last year around this time i did well on the bass and crappies. Has anyone else been doing well there recently? I cant fish until after 5 we were going to fish until dark then try for some catfish. Thanks, Ed

The one time I took my boat there I went left out from the launch and very nearly got bogged down in mud. My motor got clogged up with mud and I vowed never to go back. There must be some deeper water somewhere. I just couldnt find it.

Don't think you can fish past dark at Loyalhanna, could be wrong though. I've been up there three times this year and caught over 10 LM each time. Rapala Perch DT 6 in the shallows bangin it off the bottom did it for me.

Dank - you mean up in the shallows to the left of the launch? I'd love to have a topo map of that place to know how to navigate it a little better.

esbdmb...no not to the left of the launch...way to shallow there. Go right of launch and follow down past the run in on the left. Start fishing everywhere right after you pass the run in, there's even a little (very little) cove before the run in on the right where I've had a lot of luck.

McKeesport is really bad now.NO parking, trucks every where they are building there now,and there was room for only one trailer to park.So I would stay away from there for awhile.Looks like they will be building all summer....FYI.

Hey everyone, I'm Joe and I'm a maintenance mechanic at Loyalhanna Dam.  Here's what you need to know - NEVER, Never turn left out of the boat launch.  In low water you could walk across the lake on that side.  Granted, you'd sink in the mud, but you can see mud almost all the way to the opposite bank.  Because of the turn in the lake right there, the silt from the upper end of the lake gets caught and collected there.  Turn right, stick to the right bank (the one the launch is on) and you'll be fine.  We set buoys to show you where the shoals are, so watch for them.  Also, we're going to be installing a new sign and a map with water depths, so you can look before you launch.  There's good catfishing near the ****, and also in the bay across from the Loyalhanna Woodlands boat docks.  I'd also recommend fishing right below the dam.  Walk down the hill and fish off the wall, you never know what's going to come out of there.  I watched a guy pull a 24" walleye out last year, I pulled out a similar length gar and my boss has seen people catch freshwater eels.  It's good fishing and good for family.  There's a small pavilion and a picnic table, and we usually have a port-o-potty there in the summer.  Also if you pull into the far side of the lot by the office there's a trail leading down to the lake.  Throw chicken livers out there at night and you can keep your line wet.  Catfish all night.  The lake also ranked in the top 10 in PA for Musky.  The fish and game commission set traps yearly, and routinely pull out musky over 36".  One was trapped last year by the rock point just past the boat launch.  Also refresh yourself on the different types of catfish.  They trapped two state record cats last year.  I can't remember what kind they were, but I know they were sub species, not your typical channel but a White Catfish or something like that.  Some type I wouldn't know the difference, but there are records swimming around in the lake.  There are no restrictions on time, but if you're on a boat at night, make sure you have the proper lights and they're working.

Good info there. Thanks. I haven't had the boat on that lake in a couple years but I remember going left of the boat launch in a channel before, has that since sited in? I fished the outflow for a couple hours yesterday. Water was pretty high, but it was good to wet a line. Lake appeared to be about 75% ice free where I drove past it.

Ok Joe, I have a lake question for you. Down towards the dam on the right there are constant bubbles in the water. It is a lot of air coming up from the bottom. What can cause that much air under the lake bed? My guess was an old mine or something. If you know what I am referring to any thoughts?
