Sometimes it's not the fishing

We went this weekend on a backpack into a brookie pond called Fishbrook pond  above Lake George in the Adirondacks. I hauled my pack raft and was going to concentrate on the fishing, but the fish didn't want to concentrate on my flies. Turns out, from the DEC officer and the fellows actually catching (and gutting), they were gorging on leeches, so worms worked, and little else-unless of course you had leeches, or the RIGHT flies. We bailed early and took the detour to the top of the Mountain the pond was located on. Turned out to be a phenomenal choice. It's view  is said to be one of the best in the Adirondacks. It's very good, we agree. Lots of wildflowers out, too. I did have several  brookies that flopped off at the raft and a bunch of short strikes. I was frustrated with the fishing , but the incredible campsite, hot dogs and burgers cooked over the open fire, and the view from the top, calmed it all down. I've had days in the dead of winter on the SR like that. Some beautiful snow formations, the sound of the river tinkling through the ice, the sun turning all the trees into sparkling diamonds, make a few fish played with enough. It usually isn't for me, but sometimes I can relate to what Retired has said a number of times to describe his philosophy of fishing. I catch what I can, using the methods that I like, but sometimes I have to accept my limitations,  back off and let what's around me be enough.

Is that Lake George in the background? Looks like Bolton Landing/Sagamore off in the distance. The diversity that is New York is why I'll never leave.

Gas was $4.15 standard in Saranac on sat.. $3.89 locally around town here today..
Trips are however priceless so I try not to cry too much over the high cost of living life.. Maybe Just Whine a little... Still nice to know there is a 6 million acre free park to play in :)

HT-No arguement here. I just wish I lived closer to the Dacks or the Great Lakes/Finger Lakes region. Still considering a trip to the WB Ausable in the early part of June. I would like to catch the Green Drake hatch if I could. Problem is I have no partners in crime so I usually fly solo. Not really a complaint because sometimes it better to march to sound of your own music. Of course an IPod Touch with Dead/Furthur tunes and a good hatch is all I really need. Sorry Charlie, as you know these topics take on a life of their own.. Someday I hope we all Kumbya around a campfire for hrs on end and talk about the good things in life..

    So , TB:
the Ausable was not giving up much this weekend.. Conditions were a tad high with mostly volumes of cold water.. I do think there is a picture of a Phatty brookie in the 15" range floating around cyber space somewhere though
Another 2 weeks and she should be prime..
As always the saying goes.. When the bugs are biting, so are the fish.. No bugs just yet..

I'll be in the area for 9 days straight starting the first week in June.. Give me a shout if you want to fly..

That sounds like a good plan

Charlie, looks and sounds like a good time was had. Its nice to see and hear about outdoor ventures where ever they are. Right on...... and yes, its not always about the fish... im learning this even more and more now that im teaching my little ones to fish... that trace atkins song sums it up pretty well..."she thinks we're just fishin"... simple words in that song but good....
