You dont know what it is like to make your starving business commercial fishing! My family has been doing it for years. And THEY ( the powers to be ) keep making it more difficult, with adding more rules and more regulations. How would you like someone to tell you, you cant do maintainance if you plan to use duct tape, hammers, polyseal, razor knives, etc...... Your job jost got freakin way more difficult, huh? This is the last I'm gonna say on this topic as we been down this road already.

Bloody, I do feel for your family. However the regulations that are put on commercial fishermen and hunters are absolutely necessary. While these groups have fed millions of people, history points out that they have no desire to control themselves or protect any living creature if not regulated to do so. There comes a time at which you have to adapt to the times or change professions. That may be a hard stance, but the regulations are good for everybody and every ecosystem even though those regulations may seem extreme to those involved in the industry.

    No regulation = no fish

Human nature will make sure of that

Oh and it can go too far sometimes but not as much as most make it out to be

BTW commercial fishing the great lakes is assinine. Way more money to be made in sports fishing. Get a clue on that. But then some folks might have to start thinking for a change and for a lot of them that is never gonna happen. Big Tony is a criminal, breaks the law, put him out of business.

Article link doesn't work for me...

Is this the Jerry Mathers case?

Panther, there is obviously money to be made commercially fishing the great lakes, ever see the price of perch or walleye in the store?? Not that I like seeing gillnets and all. Yes, I prefer sport fishing but also understand the commercial fisherie.

Just because you can make money tearing up a great lake doesn't mean you have to.

Sports fishing undert opu r current regs provides the greatest fishery in North America. Kick the netters and all the hoseheads off and it would be a ton better yet.

There isn't a commercial fisherman alive who wouldn't take em all for a buck if left tot heir own devices.

I'm with ya duud, they should do their commercial fishin' within the regs. Not sure either one of us want to know the tonnage the canadians pull out of there...

Not sure what would happen to the ecosystem if there was no commercial fishing of perch (maybe nothing, maybe good things and maybe bad). It's not uncommon to find schools of perch 20' thick and a mile long now, can only imagine what would happen with the population explosion.

These bone heads just went about it illegally, got busted and will (hopefully) now pay the price...

My father and I had a snagged anchor out on the lake about three years back. When the three grown men on the boat finally got the anchor up, it had a twisted up old gill net attached to it. With the weight of the thing I imagine it was quite long. It looked like it had been buried in the mud for awhile. We were able to cut the anchor free and let the zebra muscle encrusted net fall back to the bottom. My Dad actually cut his hand pretty bad freeing the net. I wonder if I have this guy to blame.

I would like to see Mr. "self entitlements" answer to this. Commercial fishing made the great lakes the great fishery it is today....and he is apparently clueless. If he is dumb enough to believe a lawyer on this one, they are smart enough to take his money. The state court is not dumb enough to allow a class action suit....it is money out of their pockets. Even if accepted as a submit, it would sit on a desk forever. He is also someone who knows nothing about commercial fishing. Just because you live in Erie, does not mean you have a clue.

I do not condone breaking the laws on commercial fishing, and gill nets are an obvious no-no. The authorities will take care of the problem, and set an example. Just because one person violated the US laws (differ from Canadian laws).....does not mean it has to give the whole industry a bad name. It's not a matter of the method of commercial fishing, it is simply against the laws set forth by the governing body of this great lake to use gill nets and to do commercial fishing period.. Plenty of families make their living off of commercial fishing....and follow the laws, and work a hell of a lot harder than you could ever dream of.

Also Slick, do your research on the blue pike before you want to blame commercial fishing......the changing climates, introduction of rainbow smelt....and pollution was the cause of extinction....not commercial fishing. I am sure it did not help, but either did sport fisherman. Obviously you spend to much time on this web-site, and not enough on educating yourself.
