ct stocked trout

Hey-
Ct has stocked what I think are some of the best Trout in years. In put and take systems we  are at the mercy from year to year as to the size fishes that get stocked by the various States.
Ct  has outdone itself with fish up to about 16 inches of various breeds inc Brookies. Havent seen much under a foot yet.  It has been GREAT in the small brushy streams using ultra lite gear.
For a long time there 6 to 10 inch Trout  were bout the norm and it frankly was getting VERY boring . This year is GREAT.
Thanks to the Ct Fisheries folks.
Heck, its even raining outside for a change.

Yes that is great that they are stocking nice size fish. Here in Joysee (NJ) when they stock 100 fish in an area the fishermen keep 110 fish. Not good from week to week during the season. I would like to see one stream per year on a rotating basis be catch and release only and then before the season is over open it up to a 3 trout a day instead of the 6 per day we have now. Maybe some of these holdovers can make it until the next season. Kids need to catch fish to get hooked, there is nothing worse for a kid than casting all day and coming up with a big zero. Fishing is great but catching is better. Just my opinion...

In   past years Ct has gone from a 5 Trout creel limit in almost all Ponds and Streams to a mix of limits ,methods and special Kids areas.
To an 'old timer' it has gotten so confusing that ya gotta carry 'the book' at all times- Even some streams change criteria above or below certain points.
Streams that can carry Trout all year even have all year fishing now with C&R. in many areas. Most small places though are primarily put and take cause Summer drought and heat knock off the Trout.

I love fishing the Housatonic at Bull's Bridge and Cornwall Bridge. Until the gas prices went through the roof I used to fish
the fly fishing only area in Cornwall 4-5 times a week from 4PM until dark. Just about an hour each way from my house but worth the trip. Some big Browns and Rainbows in those waters.

Here in Pennsyltucky we get 8-10" with a occasional 2yr fish.I have lost all interest in the local scene with the exception of a occasional fly fish outing,I'm spoiled with the brutes I catch all fall/winter/spring on the tribs.
Many years ago I used to fish Joisey,at that time they stocked really nice fish.Spent many a great day on the Pequest,Paulinskill,Musky, and others.Think I'll venture over there on their fish for free day if they did n't have it already.

Free fishing days are june 16-17, the rivers are pretty warm that time of year unless we had a lot of soaking rain to keep the cool flow feeding the streams.

Jack, I grew up fishing the waters you mentioned  and the South Branch of the Raritan. It's very like where I live now- numerous trout rivers within 1/2 hour of my house. The exception is a very low population density. Joisey 50 years ago was far more tolerable and still had some wild streams in the Northwestern part of the state. I built a house for and moved my parents out of there 12 years ago. I got out of there  35 yrs. ago.  Stocking is very important to alot of people's sanity. Fishing is  a very mentally healthy activity, unless it's the SR- then all bet's are off.

Hey Charlie, you may just have something there. The State of NY may just have a very lucrative revenue stream in the Salmon River, especially during salmon season. They can drop the net on hundreds, if not thousands, of individuals under the Mental Hygiene statutes for the self destructive behavior they exhibit during the salmon run.

Jack, last time i fished the flatbrook was about 11 years ago and i brought 2 wild brookies to hand that day. They had stocked very nice fish at that time amd im sure they still do. Fished the musky and paulinskill both once, but like you said, trib fishing always over rided the trout fishing. It really isnt worth the hour trip for me. Now im in northern orange county NY and im very close to the western catskill creeks grew up fishing on. All i need is some time to get out one of these days to wet a line. Rivers like the callicoon, ten mile creek, mongaup creek, willowemoc... those are my kinda trout streams

Well at the present time we are finally getting some rain in SE Penna.,maybe I'll get out there one of these days now that there is some flow to the creeks.
Charlie, when we get together this fall it seems we can talk about something we both experienced in Jersey. There was a couple years that I did n't buy a Penna. license 'cause I spent all my time fishing NJ.Used to fish the lakes also, spent a lot of time on Swartswood,Bear, and Delaware lakes.Huge Bluegills,Perch,Crappie, and LM Bass were the fish there.Lots of memories of those GREAT days fishing with my father and uncles.

Just got back from a coupla days at my Ny place- House issues so only went to the lake for an hour or so casting Cleos- no luck.
Didnt get to the Sr at all-rained like CRAZY on Thurs night and the river came way up. Guy here and a guy there but not much in the way of pressure- Fella said he saw a lone FRESH KING upriver- was an experienced river guy who seemed to know his fish too.

Heard a good story today about the size of the Ct stocked Trout. Might just be true for several of you folks in nearby States too.
Fella says that it was so warm this Winter that the fish in the hatcheries maintained a much larger  than normal  appetite throughout the Winter and grew much faster than normal as the result- sounds OK to me.
Hope that happened to a number of other species in the wild too.

Sounds like good news rt..hopefully your theory does cross over in the wild. hey, the kings are in earlier than usual on the east end... and they are gorging. We may see some brutes this season... too bad we didnt run in to each other this past weekend. I too checked out the lake on sunday. One guy on the end of the pier had caught a brown early in the morning. I almost thought he was charlie from the distance because the gentleman had an unmistakable beard there were also a few guys fishing the mouth of grindstone. There were a few large long nosed gar circling around in there.

Yup, i had my eye out for them as well. It sure is just about that time of year. I dont prefer snakes myself. Ive gotta tell ya, those gar are pretty cool to watch. Ive yet to catch one but i may try this season. I have seen them while bass fishing some northern tribs in june but never targetted them. They get pretty big. Next time your down there keep your eye out for them. One gentlman i spoke with was getting them to hit rapalas and cleo type lures.

Dime, I don't have gar anywhere near me, but I caught them in Tennessee. They are pretty amazing fighters and jump alot. I wanted to add them to the fly caught  species list,  so I used yak hair Clousers to tangle in their teeth. That bony snout is really hard to drive a hook in. Lots of guys down south use yellow nylon rope , frayed and tied on a jig head. Sounds strange, but it's the truth. They are aggresive, much like pickerel and pike.  I'm glad to see my beard isn't quite unique, however the horns sticking out of my head are....

Thanks for the info charlie. I think id rather get them on the fly especially if theyre good fighters. Ive also noticed they are always on the move so back hand casting will probably be best suited for them for quick in and out casts as they move...
So bucktail type salt water patterns with flash??? I assume a steel leader is necessary and would help get the fly down. Luckily most times ive seen you you had a hat on...so havent seen the horns yet :)

I hate snakes and do my best to give them a wide berth. Years ago I had a subordinate that captured a snake near the gas pumps during a mid-night tour. He picked the **** thing up with a shovel and put it in a light blue plastic bag to bring inside to show me. Much to my dismay he had captured a Copperhead about two feet long. Won't kill you but it'll make you pretty sick. A number of Copperheads and Timber Rattlers in my area. I do my best to stay away from old field stone walls when I'm out turkey hunting. Too many nooks and crannies for those buggers to hide. Old Jake No Shoulders and I don't see eye to eye.

Maybe we'll circle the thread back to hatchery raised gar....
You  don't need much wire, it's more they  get the fly tangled crosswise in their snout.
Don't use bucktail! They'll cut it to shreds instantly and it won't grab in their teeth. Try strong synthetic fibers like slinky fiber or super hair. Any  3-4 inch streamer  tied on a long shank ,  with hard to cut,   strong fibers will do it.
Of course, pictures are a must if you catch one. I've got an alligator gar pic somewhere....
Unless a thread starts off as a complete dud or is a major spew/hate fest, they rarely stay on topic. Guess we can be glad they don't......

    Hijack away ---

Hey- nightmare water snake story- ya gotta remember here that they are probably the bitiest thing goin.
Was Trout fishin a small stream here in central Ct long ago in the early AM and decided to sit on a midstream rock above a pool. Hadent really looked down as I was throwin rope out into the pool while slowly movin along.
Ya know that point ya get to when sitting where ya cant quite get back up ????
Wellll as luck would have it thats when I looked down at the rock and saw the Water snake all curled up on it right under my **** an lookin up at me.
Ya know that kinda electric shock feelin ya get when seein a snake  up close and all sooprisin and all ???  X10 when your privates are closer to it than your eyeballs.
Dopy splashed into the water on one side of the rock and the snake  splashed in on the other side.
We both made it to opposite shores.

Speaking of snakes.....just got in from walking my Boxer (Mollie) at a city park that has a small trout stream running thru it.After a long brisk run Mollie was thirsty and went into the creek for a drink, and there curled up in some brush was a BIG water snake getting some sun.Mollie passed by within 2 ft and neither the snake or Mollie cared.Good that Mollie did n't see Mr. snake or I'm sure I would 've had some excitementI don't fear snakes but you gotta respect their territory, leave them be and they will do likewise.

We all tend to have a hitch hiker hijacking mentality at times... dont see any problem with it. It all comes down to the intent; and I see nothing but good intentions here lately. Charlie thanks for the info On gar fishing. When the time comes i mayand reach out to you again just to get some more specificS.

On the other hand trevor next time you catch some trout in connecticut maybe keep them alive in a cooler and bring them up north. we can stock them ourselves in our own little honey holes
