dry fly setup

I have a scott 8'6" 5wt SAS855 with a WF5F Rio gold line and a old St.Croix 7'6" 4wt with a DT4F Rio classic line. What would be best leader and tipit for both for dryflys? I mostly nymph and streamer fish, but caught a few last week on top (probably by total accident or luck)and I really got the fever to do that more. What a thrill to see that fish come up and suck in that fly.Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

    For tippet size.
    http://www.theflyfishingforum.com/forums/fly-lines/24828-chart-leader-tippet-selection.html

I tie most of my leaders.
But I think you'd be better off purchasing knotless tapered leaders.
For the short 4 wt rod, maybe an Umpqua 7 1/2' 5x leader. They are a bit softer than most leaders out there.
Cut 22 inches off the front end and tie a small perfection loop. Loop to loop 1-2 feet of 5x tippet.
If you need to add 6x tippet, cut the looped 5x tippet down to 8 inches ( 2 inches for knot tag ends)and surgeon knot 1-2 feet of 6x tippet.
For 7x, cut the 6x down to 8 inches and knot on your 7x.

For the 5wt, maybe try a Rio 9ft 4x leader. Cut off 24" and add a small loop. Down size your tippet following the same advice above.
loop on 4x and fish. Cut 4x and tie in on 5x and fish. Etc....

thanks Dano I'm suprised you say loop to loop conection.Thought that may cause problems with cast, but it does make it easy as I have trouble tying other knots.

Dano gave you some good stuff

Personally I like a double sergons for leader to tippet

Another thing... I know you probably aren't looking to drop $ on a new line
    But I HATE rio gold
All line companies make finer/ longer taper lines that are better suited for dries
When you are looking for something new, start a thread. You'll get some good suggestions

I actually like Rio Gold as a big water line, especially when the wind kicks up. It shoots good, too.
I liked the old Rio Selective Trout lines but hate the new Trout LT that replaced it.
That Rio 4wt Classic is a good line as I used those for years. They were especially good on a couple of my 4wt bamboo rods.
Rio had some great lines in the Classic and Selective Trout. it's a shame that had to change a good thing.

    Huh
I made the switch from the selective trout to the LT and like it

I'll give you the shooting part for the gold
Problem is you need to shoot when you start to carry 35'
I found it kinda falls apart at any more distance

I think lines are even more confusing and a personal pref than rods
It's a shame they are as readily available to test the way rods are

mook, i use 6x tapered leader in 9 foot if i know i'll just be dry fly fishing. if i'm streamer fishing and maybe go to dry fly later on i'll use a 5x 7 1/2 foot. this way i can add 6x or even 7x to the 5x for 9foot of leader.
i like orvis tapered leader but cortland 333 is less expensive.
i use 444 cortland DT on most my rods. WF lines i've used orvis but don't care for it. right now i use cortland WF and a scientific angler and cortland dyna-tip for my 4wt.

I talking more or less about shooting the belly of the line through the guides.
I get in a lot of situations that sometimes call for creative casting, especially when the backcast is restricted or I need to go under branches to the far bank.
But I do find it fun to reach out a cast or two t distant risers. In those cases, the Gold does well for me to about 70ft.
Yea, then it's not so good farther out. But it's a good compromise as most of my targets within 15 to 55 ft.

    Absolutely.
