If regs applying to perch fishing from a water craft are the same as someone on shore - NO ! Also, keep in mind that if you give a fish you caught to another fellow fisherman it counts as a fish toward your limit and a fish toward the limit of the fisherman to whom you gave it. Stringers, buckets, coolers, fish holding bags etc. can only be used by one fisherman and cannot contain more than the daily limit while fishing.

I hope it's legal because that's pretty much what everyone (self included) does. You never see boats with separate fish boxes for each fisherman. Heck, boats are even designed / built with just one fish box. I think the answer to your question is, yes it is legal.

an officer at elk creek told me that everyones fish could be in one cooler but had to be on seperate stringers.....personally, I thought its kinda stupid because all the stringers could of been mine also.

I dont think there is any way outside of the DNR mounting security cameras on everyones boat to keep them from knowing which fish each person actually caught. Just about every guy out there on Erie just throws them in the cooler and makes sure to stop at the limit (Ex. 30,60,90 etc.). That being said its best to have some kind of a counting device like a pitch counter that makes it easy to keep track so you dont go past your limit. Technically speaking though If there are two guys on a boat and one catches 40 while the other only gets 20, that is TECHNICALLY illegal i suppose.. Your boat has a limit of 60 though so when you get to the dock, you tell everyone you both caught your 30

I asked Brook Tolbert WCO the same question a few years ago... While you are "Supposed" to have your fish either in a separate container . The WCO's in Erie never push the issue ...... But he added They can bust you if you have more then 30 in a container. I would say if you are a jerk to them they will be to you too.....

    Great

So 2 guys in my boat and I could have 30 in a bucket and 30 on the bottom of the boat. Whatever works right

Everywhere but Erie, its been common for years, everyones fish go in one cooler, even charter boat do it,Eyes, perch,Steelies.I fished Erie from the mid 70's till 92 three days a week and never had a warden give me any trouble for perch or eyes, just looking at numbers and how many guys on the boat.

Technicalities could get you if someone wanted to really push the issue... because they are to be kept seperate but seems that isnt enforced.
If you are really concerned about it, or someone isn't into the 'shared limit' concept then just bring along a kitchen sized garbage bag for each person. Each bag can be in the cooler but they are technically 'seperate', so as long as each person only claims one you are fine!

I believe this issue was pertaining to headboats only. The few times i've fished on a headboat, i kept my perch in my own bucket. The wco has a problem with captains and mates filling out everyones limit on the boat. They planted spies on a couple boats and busted them when they came back in. Personal boats and charters, i've never seen anyone keep them seperated.
