Went to the Yough at Confluence for the weekend.  What a horrible mess that river has become for spring fishng.  Not because there are no fish or water.  It's because of that stinkin moss that seems to get worse year after year.   I mean really,  you spend as much of your fishing time pulling that crap off your lines as you do line in the water.   I fushed that river prior to the hydro plant going in, and there was NEVER any moss in there like that.  It's so frustrating because it's a nice cold water fishery.  The moss situation gets better as the summer wears on, but really frustrating in the spring.   I'd imagine it's mutliple times worse this year due to the warm early spring.

It's funny that you mentioned that. I was on Erie this past Saturday fishing for smallmouth in 25 ft of water and encountered the same thing. I've been fishing those waters almost every May for 20 yrs, and I never encountered this thick hair like aquatic growth that was all over the bottom, as well as floating or suspended just below the surface. Made for a miserable day. A guy I was talking to later that day was telling me it was due to the unusually warm winter and spring.

Yeah, I do.  I fish the lower reaches towards Smithton.  Have been since the 70's.   But there's something about the mountains and the cold water that I enjoy.   Lower reaches are starting to get quite warm.

Anybody know if the moss has gotten better recently ???

I still haven't been there this year.  But if it is didymo, and I don' tknow if it is or not, it will never go away.

Don't believe it's didymo.  It's been in that river since they put the hydroplant in, but it's ultra-prevalent this year, and my guess is because of the warm winter/spring.

I think if it were didymo, we'd have heard much more being reported on it since it's such a well known fishery.

Whatever type of moss or algae it is, it can cause great damage to the ecosystem in blooms.  It was a much more radical bloom, and caused by man, but just look at what happened to Dunkard Creek.  Amazing that so much pollution and TDS was allowed to be dumped into that creek that it caused a bloom of saltwater algae.  We all know the rest of the story there.

Fished the outflow this past weekend. The rock snot has significantly reduced over the past couple of weeks. I believe it is due to a heavy flow for a week, so I anticipate it will return as soon as a light flow gives it time to grow.

Terrible news.  I barely made trips this year due to the "moss" problem, but was hoping the excessive amounts were just an anomoly due to the mild winter/spring.  I guess my great times I had there will be distant fond memories now.  I'm sure the stuff will easily be transferred into Laurel also.  That stream being so shallow, will just die.  This sucks hard.

By the way, it's 2012.  We put a man on the moon 40+ years ago, but we can't find a SAFE chemical solution to rid this crap from our streams ?

Has anyone been to the outflow recently ?  Past week or so ?  I was wondering if the algae had goten any better since earlier in the spring.
