There are a lot of them. I catch them on poppers fishing for Stripers and occasionaly when trolling.

I did the best on huge cats last week of June first week of July.I really was fishing for eyes, running hot en'tots on the edges of sunken islands next to deep drop offs.I caught them up to 16lbs.One day I caught 11 cats 8-16 lbs and 3 eyes 25-29 inches. Those cat are always there year after year to spawn, they just hit your lure to protect their nest, caught many big males with a mouthful of baby inch long fry.

I'm figuring the water is still a little to cold. I usually fish the shallows at night, with chicken livers, or even hot dogs. I actually caught the my biggest Lg. Mouth last year on a hot dog while fishn' for cats under the 528 bridge.

I caught a pair of three foot blues a couple weeks ago on chicken livers. Put up a hell of a fight. Also, brown and yellow bullheads and quite a few channel cats. They're in there. All sizes.

I wouldn't say the water's too cold. Sounds strange, but cats are typically one of the 1st game fish to start actively feeding in the spring. Just go out, and TRY to fish for any other species, and you'll catch channels in that lake. It's polluted with them.

ORIGINAL: beerman0303 Blue Cats in Lake Arthur ??? I was thinking the same thing... My guess is, large channels? They seem to get a bit uglier when bigger. It would be pretty cool if there were blue cats in Arthur though. Those things get huge. Could probably help with the gizzard shad that get too big for most other fish. Although, I doubt they would exclusively eat them and leave smaller gamefish alone.

I think Blues would be devestating to the forage base. The channels IMO are already having an impact on the panfish.

Yeah, I kind of thought that while I was typing. I've only had a few days dealing with the cats, and really didn't mind too much... Although, always a better feeling catching what you set out for. I like the mix that Arthur has. Taking away from the panfish would be a huge hit, not only for the food cycle, but for the primary catch of the lake for most.

Anyone eat them? I dig some fried catfish. They probably taste like mud the warmer the temps get though.

I haven't, but fried catfish is pretty good. Live catfish kind of freak me out a bit, especially the big ones. The snot they leave on fishing line, kind of knocks off a bit of dinner plate appeal too. I'm betting they are better eating and better for you, than the trout being ropped locally. I have had some fish out of Arthur from the warmer water, that take on a seaweed type taste. Very similar to the smell that the lake takes on in the Summer. Slicing thicker fish into thinner fillets usually solves that, or smoking, or C&R and buying fish from the store (cheaper that way & less cleanup)...

My dad loved those big stinky( seaweed tasting cats from Arthur) I gave them all to him,he would keep them alive for a week or two in huge plactic barrels with the hose trickling in it and fillet them ,he could never get enough. I have eaten small channels 14- 18 inches from Pymy a few times and they where very good eating. One fall day after a duck hunt I caught big numbers of that size cat a the spillway somewhere around 25 or 30,and had a couple of fried catfish Steeler party's.Everyone liked them.As for BLUES in Arthur NO WAY!
