Rochester Spring Browns 4/15/12

Went to Rochester this past weekend for a Spring Browns charter on Sunday 4/15.

Left the dock shortly after 6 AM and headed East out of Shumway Marine on the lower Genesee River. The Captain set up his otter boards setting out 4 lines on each side with an assortment of stick baits 100' to 125' back. The two downriggers were set 5-7 feet down 50' back with spoons. We began working from Irondequoit Bay East past Shipbuilders Creek trying to stay in areas that had a little stain to the water.

The first two passes we had four hits in the vicinity of Shipbuilders, boating two small Browns in the 2-3 lbs range while dropping the other two after a brief engagement. The Captain felt that one of the fish may have been a King salmon due to the line being bit through.

On two of our passes heading West past Shipbuilders we stuck and boated one Brown that was 11 lbs plus and a King 9 lbs, both on the downriggers. The King was taken in approximately 20' of water. A short time later we boated a small Atlantic (16") which was quickly released. Later in the morning we boated three more Browns in the 2-5 lbs range and a small Coho approximately 4 lbs.

I released the three small Browns that I boated but kept the Coho as it was bleeding badly from being deeply hooked. My fishing buddies kept everything that they boated except for the undersized Atlantic. We did not hook a fish after 11:00 AM and the rain began to fall a shortime later.

For the day we boated 6 Browns, a King, Coho and Atlantic. The fishing was a slow pick and I would rate the trip as fair. Hope to have some photos at a future point in time.

Glad you got some, TB. I've heard you can get the browns in shallow water out of yaks and such (wind and wave permitting)- anyone done this, or know about it?   I'm sorry if this is a hijack, I thought it might be an extension- I'll move it if you want, Gerry.

Ironically, a boat that fished the same area a week before did very well. That same boat headed further West and did well 4/14, 15 and 16 fishing Oak Orchard. They need rain to get those small creeks and rivers to dump some stained water into the big pond. Apparently alot of fish are stuck in the creeks because of low water levels.

Fichy-No big deal, I would imagine that yak fishing would be a hoot since we were no more than 50 yds from the shore most of the day.

Thanks for the trout report 21 ..
I don't think I have yet to wet a line for them yet so you got me thinking..
It's all about with good folk that make the most memories..
Days in the woods alone get boring..
    Good fishing :

Hope to hear or share many more..

I generally agree that fishing or hunting with friends keeps things interesting if not entertaining. I must say I enjoy doing both on my own timetable so there are no constraints because someone else has a different agenda. My only concern is that trips like the one I made this past weekend are far too short for the time spent travelling. I tried to convince my compatriots to fish a second day but I was overruled. Driving from my house to Worcester (near Cobleskill) then on to Rochester is a six hour trip. That's without any stops or detours. Driving nearly 650 miles round trip to fish for approximately 8 hours is assinine. Love the fishing but hate the travelling that comes with it. If I could only convince my wife to move closer to Lake O and the Salmon River.

On a tangent, a sad day indeed hearing that Levon Helm will pass. Thanks for all the great music. You will be missed but not forgotten.
