Alabama Rigs

Watched a bass show last night on the outdoor channel one of the guys was using this, has anybody around here tried one. Looked like a school of baitfish, not sure how legal it would be in PA. aren't we allowed just three hooks per line? Just curious if somebody has tried it.

They are commonly used in southern waters, usually for trolling. We have numerous rigs we've used in the Chesapeake bay for stripers. They are only legal in Pa if you replace some of the baits with 'dummy baits' without hooks. So you can use them in Pa, but only if you modify them so only 3 of the baits in the spread have a hook.
It is a very heavy set up, I would expect it to be very tiring to use for more than short periods of time.

There was a guy throwing one at Greenlick a couple weeks ago. Sounded like an anchor hitting the water every time. I think bass fishing was slow, overall that day because the two guys started in on the bluegills not long after they went by me.

Think what you'd like but that rig works. Just like everything else in fishing, right time and right place.

I use the Helicopter Lure endorsed by Roland Martin on an alabama rig. Sometimes I dummy bait with a banjo minnow. Works every time.

i was watching a bass tourney on tv recently, almost every angler in the top 10 was using an alabama rig. funny thing was by the final day of the tournament it looked like the arms were gonna fall off of the guys that were throwning that rig. thats a lot of weight to be casting all day long!

no doubt it's an effective rig, i just think its kinda dumb. i will stick to finesse fishing.

^^^I would love to have a video of that, LOL. The rig hits the water like a cannonball, imagine the looks you would get from other fisherman.
