Yeah, 15" and up. But honestly imo that lake has no business in the big bass program. Thousands of those 7-13" bass. Somebody still shoulda said something.

I once saw a young kid and his dad fishing a small lake called little Dunlap. The kid caught a monster bass 8-9 pounds! This was in may and she was full of eggs. He put the bass on a stringer so I told his dad that bass season was not in and that fish has been around a long time and should be released to help the lake. He blew me off and they left with the fish. If you like to eat bass and it is in season then great take some home but to take a fish like that is very disturbing to me. I have always practiced catch and release and always will!

I have seen them check fish, but even the PFC hesitates to say much to kids because of the flack that they get from the public about picking on the kids, right or wrong. With all of the time that I spend there I have very seldom seen guys keep bass. sam

I very seldom see,a,15" bass at twin lakes. Isn't there a certain % of big fish supposed to be in the lake to get the designation? And the most recent survey came up real short? I know there's big fish in there, but how many really? 10? 20 tops? Here, http://fishandboat.com/images/reports/2010bio/8x06_23twin.htm

The big bass program is a bust. The biggest bass in the state are in rivers, farm ponds and Erie.

the main problem is habitat, without the right habitat you wont have big fish.

Are you talking about the same rivers that the Bassmaster Classic was held? You know the one where the winning weight was only 13 pounds?

QFT. I didn't say anything because the bass were clearly already dead and I don't think two young kids running around doing whatever they wanted with no parents following them would even care that what they were doing was wrong..

Been awhile since I fished Twin regularly, but if it's anything like it was 15 years ago, I agree.

Thing is, 90% of the fishermen there cover about 5% of the available water. And the guys in the boats usually aren't targeting bass.

Those are big lakes, and just because you can't catch big bass from shore doesn't mean they're not there. For those of you that don't think there aren't big bass there, get yourself a pedal boat sometime after the spawn is over and fish the edges of suspended weed beds out in the lake with big bass baits.

Another thing - bet that the really, really big bass in there have a primary or secondary forage base that no fisherman ever matches out there - Rainbow trout. An 18" plus bass will have absolutely no problem making a meal out of a lot of the trout that get stocked in there.

One last thing - wasn't it about 7 or 8 years ago that a potential new state record was claimed to have been caught and released there?

From the biologist survey of the lake in 2010:

Our survey crew collected 269 largemouth bass during the nighttime electrofishing runs (Table 2). The overall total fish captured increased since the last survey, however the number of quality size bass dropped slightly (Figure 3).

2010 Survey Gear: 3 Nighttime Boat Electrofishing Runs
    Fish Species------------Number-----Size Range (Inches)---Comments
    Largemouth Bass---------269--------3 - 17----------------13% were 12" or larger
    1% were 15"or larger

No. Contrary to popular belief in the south west corner of the state, Pennsylvania includes a lot more areas than what remains of the Pittsburgh Metro.

The Susquehanna and Delaware are relatively good for smallmouth. There are others. None of them compare to the real producer rivers and reservoirs in some other states. Erie is one of the best places for smallmouth in the world though.

Our largemouth fishery in PA isn't great at all. It's not even good by national standards. And the 3 rivers around the city certainly isn't one of the best places in the state to catch them.

+1 Although they will never rival Lake Arthur or many other lakes in numbers, almost every year there are 24"-26" large mouths caught there, that I have personaly seen.Same with channels, almost every year I have personaly seen cats over 30" caught & released.Although I am sure that there are better lakes to target big fish, for a lake that size & the amount of pressure that it gets I think that both lakes do o.k. As far as the surveys go I was at the last 2 & conditions were poor for trapping & shocking & you only get the ones that are shallow at the time. Also the low numbers of big ones show the importance of C&R in the small lakes. sam

I sure hope there's more big bass in there than I think. I know there's a few, I just don't think that its anywhere near the % required for big bass regs. I have fished the deep weed edges from a paddle boat and still got a bunch of skinny 10-13" bass. Maybe its just me though. Although I have no issues getting bigger bass at other lakes. Don't get me wrong, its a great lake to bass fish, I just don't think the size is there % wise. Maybe a forage problem, all they have to eat is panfish and trout, they need some shiners in there or something.

I was never arguing that point. I couldn't agree with you more there.

I just thought you were talking about rivers in SW Pa rather than the whole state. I am aware there are other rivers in the state.

I swear I read somewhere that there was supposed to be a certain % of big bass in a lake to be considered for the big bass program. After a lil research, I can't find the #, I think I'm wrong... I read this in another survey while looking for that # " A dense population of largemouth bass was also present, but the number of legal-size bass made up only a small percentage of the total. Forthis reason, Big Bass regulations were applied to Mammoth Dam in 1999."

The Bassmasters Classic results were not a very good measuring stick for what the rivers hold. There is a reason, they held the event there in the first place. The surveys they take, were more than enough to get the Bass Masters and the FLW champanionship there.

The timing was just bad for the Classic. Every 2-3 years, the rivers get a rediculous class of gizzard shad. The year of the Classic, was probably the largest amount that I have ever seen. The fish were too busy gourging themselves on schools of gizzard shad, to really pay attention to much else. When they are eating live gizzard shad, 24/7, even the best immitation gizzard shad and best anglers are going to have trouble fooling them. Even a live gizzard shad that wasn't swimming right was getting passed on. I personally, had one of my worst few months on the rivers then, and when I was putting in a good bit of time on them too.

That said, Erie is by far, a better option. Same with the Yough, Lake Arthur, Susquehanna, and many others. Although, none of these would be able to hold the amount of pros, or their bass boats, or unrestricted motors. I'm sure Erie could hold them, if they hit the right conditions, or stayed in the bay, but be really crowded. Not sure how those boats would handle 4'+ waves?

I wouldn't mind seeing a tournament up there. My guess would be that they would not handle the waves too good at all. I know I would never take a bass boat in 4 footers lol
