Crooked Creek and Loyalhanna newbie questions

My sis really wants learn how to fish and catch something with some size, my family moved up by these two lakes, my stepdad has a boat we can use, but I know nothing about these lakes and what is in them, and he's a strictly a bass guy. What kind of fish are there, how hard is it to get something with size, any cats or carp? Sorry for all the newbie questions, I really appreciate all the help, I'm learning a lot

I don't eat catfish anymore. One day I caught one, it was the most fun I ever had catching a fish and when i held him, he started talking to me. I respected that fish, and I promised him i wouldn't hurt his kind ever again, but crappies ..well, those are fair game.

Both those lakes have channels in em. A nd carp too, though ive never seen em in crooked, I think they're everywhere. Try shallow bays and flats, look for muddy water where carp are feeding. Good bass and panfishing in those lakes too. I've also caught channels at the outflow of both of those lakes in spring as well.

Thanks! Good advice, I'll keep that in mind I'm glad to hear that there is channels and carp there in some places :)

Almost any lake around here have Cats & Carp,as do the rivers.Crooked Creek lake has a good pop. of both.I have caught Channels up to 36" at C.C. Go to any lake now & watch for jummping fish, they most likely carp & plenty of them.Heads up on C.C. & Loyalhanna dams, they are both unlimited horsepower with a lot of Bill Dance wannabes flying around with little consideration for others.Might be tough for boating beginners,C.C. has a "no-wake"zone by the beach that would be best for beginners. If you are going to a lake soon,be sure that it is not stocked with trout or is in the early trout program. sam

Thanks, good to know, and that's true about the kids, I didn't think of that, it will probably be pretty crowded then. That's a nice fish! I didn't realize there was fish like that in there :)

don't overlook conemaugh dam. it's not very far from Loyalhanna dam. below the dam can be very good depending on how much water they are letting out. it has everything, musky, pike, walleye, bass, cats, carp, pans and ect. in the lake it's not very boat accessible but can be done (electric motor only). but you can walk in though. in my opinion it's better than cc or Loyalhanna. the kiski river is good also. any questions feel free to ask

C.C and Loyalhanna have pretty much everything in them and as said above unlimited horsepower...   But I prefer C.C to that dastardly hill at Loyalhanna and Conemaugh for that matter...  I've never properly fished the Conemaugh River Lake but I've seen some pics of some monsters caught out of there...  As for fishing the outflow at Conemaugh it's pretty much float and wait type game seeing as there is so much debris and snags at least that I've encountered...  Probably gonna want some heavyweight gear unless you're not fishing from the walls at C.C and Loyalhanna...

I've been fishing cc all my life. plenty of bass, carp crappies cats and the occasional walleye. There are plenty cats to be had in the backwaters. I've personally along with a buddy had nights where 20-30 channels came pretty easily. hope this helps a little bit cc is a great fishery.
