Need carp setup advice

I'd like to get into carp fishing, it's all new to me, I'm a bass and catty girl, any advice on a cheap but sturdy setup? We got some good bait, and a rig that is working, just the poles can't handle them. Any and all experienced advice appreciated.

I don't eat catfish anymore. One day I caught one, it was the most fun I ever had catching a fish and when i held him, he started talking to me. I respected that fish, and I promised him i wouldn't hurt his kind ever again, but crappies ..well, those are fair game.

I use my flathead gear,( mh rod, baitrunner reel, 50-65 lb braid), in weedy areas that require long casts. But 90% of my carp fishing the last 2 years has been close quarters sight fishing in streams or near shorelines with light and ultralight gear. Got my first 3 yesterday on my noodle rod n 4lb test landed 2 more and lost another w a 7'6"ul and 3lb nanofil(these are only 5-10lb carp). I find it much more productive and exciting than the ol sit and wait.

I hear ya, not sure there is that kind of fishing around here. I dunno I used to live in Westmoreland county and there was a lot more streams it seemed like, could be wrong. Ha 3lb test? I'd be thinking "Oh shhhit" if I landed something big I'd be crossing my fingers the whole time. Why do you think I'm so obsessed with catfish? It was the one that got away!

just start out with some heavier noodle rods. get a couple bait feeder reels and you're set.

+1 cat gear and carp gear are 1and the same for me in most typical situations. Longer med or mh action rod, bait runner reels.

That's an idea. I like the noodle rods but 10ft is already twice my height :/ I probably need to stick to a med action shorter rod so i can actually cast it

any med action rod should do, like sevenmile said a 7' uglystik lite pro makes the fight fun and it has plenty of back bone to land the big ones also i use 20lb braid and any 2/0- 3/0 circle hook is awesome for good hook sets as for bait the list goes on and on for those bugle lips

Thanks for the advice moo, sounds like a good choice for a pole.

Anyone got any decent recipes for method mix that will stick to a slip sinker? I'm getting a really gummy mix with the oats that doesn't seem to hold up well enough to be cast, and isn't breaking up as well as I'd like.

heres my favorite a loaf of bread, brown sugar, syrup, vanilla extract, hefty spoonful of peanut butter, and 2 cup of oats and an egg optional tho mixed it up real good and i find it better if you put it in the fridge it hardens it up a little. sticks to a hook go so i guess it would stick to a sinker if ur trying to use it as a chum nothing works better then a can of corn or cat/ dog food

I was messing around with the mix and think I finally figured out a good one, It's holding up good to cast and breaking down in water. It's got a strong corn smell, I'm just wondering if you guys add any flavorings to the method, I tried vanilla but that smelled like cookie dough and the alcohol in it dried it out a bit, I don't really want to add anything liquid if I don't have to, any suggestions for flavor or just stick with corn?

garlic salt or powder and thatll up ur odds of catching a cat i usually just shake some on my hand and pack it on to ur choice of bait, works well either way though for both carp an cats

Can't seem to get anything but cats, lol. The carp were really active today too Trying to stick with the sweet flavors, but apparently channels like cherry and corn too. Always seem to catch mudcats on the stinky flavors.

i do alot of my carp and catfishing in the dog days of summer toward evening chicken liver, doughballs, and large chubs/shiners all work well, last summer in the same night i got my personal best for both 34'' 21# cat and a monster 35'' 23-24# carp fight of a lifetime, the shenango river is a real hidden gem in downtown new castle, also if u want monster carp that u can catch all day the spillway up at pymatuing is a gift from the fish gods.

try mixing up your mix with rootbeer or cherry pop. the pop helps it stick alittle better.

Ha, that's funny I actually was thinking about rootbeer drops or something, thanks. I wonder if some combination of salt, fat/oil and sugary flavor would work..they seem to like what we like. I've even heard chocolate and in UK i guess they use hemp, lol. Crazy ash carp.

If you are looking for a cheaper decent carp/cat baitrunner setup go with a Diawa BRI or BRI Plus Baitrunner Reel (about $55 and $70 respectively) paired up with a 7'+ Ugly Stick Med or Med Hvy. Add some good braid and you will end up spending around $125-$130 and have a combo that can handle just about anything in the state! Also, if you go the baitrunner route, make sure you switch to sinker sliders or egg sinkers and don't use circle hooks. With a big enough doughball you can cast a hook only with no weight or anything.

My doughball recipe is flour, Quaker quick oats, water, vanilla, and Fruity Pebbles. I call them Rainbow Vanilla Balls. Always done me well.

And beware, once you go Baitrunner, you never go back lol

I've always had good luck using the greasiest breadsticks I could find. Also, try mixing Flour, water, olive oil, salt, and a ton of garlic powder, then add some parmesan cheese. Seems like the olive oil does a good job of carrying the scent to their noses. I catch a good mix of channels and carp on this bait. If you cannot get it to stay on the hook well, try adding oats or crushed up crackers. I usually use a semi-cheap surf set up, and string it with 30-50lb braided line.
