ORIGINAL: SlipperySmitt Sweet!!! Does anyone eat the eyes or saugs from the rivers? Smitty We harvested one from the Ford City pool a while back, it was in the ballpark of 10 pounds. Even after bleeding it there was a slight "muddy" taste to it and you could tell that it was a much "older" fish when skinning it. And it had HUGE teeth!

I ate one from the Allegheny a while ago. What I learned from it was, if you have any second thoughts about eating a fish from somewhere, don't eat it. I think it tasted fine, but the entire time eating it, I was wondering if I should be eating it. It's hard to enjoy anything with thoughts like that. I am pretty sure, the majority of those fishing the rivers are C&R. Likely the most C&R walleyes in the state. Probably what makes their numbers good.

Yeah I ate one once, the estrogen worries me more than the heavy metals, I think they test for metals, not estrogen. I may keep one a year, I don't want my nuts falling off Allegheny is over 52deg already, flatheads should be getting active any day now.

ORIGINAL: SlipperySmitt Sweet!!! Does anyone eat the eyes or saugs from the rivers? Smitty "back in the day" when there was shore fishing below/behind the crowe's nest, most everybody kept every legal fish they caught. however, anybody that boats the rivers, and sees what is in it and what flows through them, and sees what the lower half of your boat looks like after a few hours on the rivers, im not sure why anybody, unless they needed food would eat anything from them. that being said, the fishing is excellent and the fish thrive. just sayin'

Most of the concerns about eating fish from the 3-Rivers are related to bacteria. Ever been to Presque Isle when they have the beaches shut down for elevated e-coli levels? While the water conditions are not always particularly appealing, cooking the fish properly will kill the bacteria present and render the fish safe for consumption. PCBs and heavy metals are another story, which is why moderation is necessary. Even with that said, I still rarely eat fish from the 3-Rivers. I would rather see them continue to thrive, especially the females...

Down south they eat catfish and sauger every day from the Ohio. At the point of the river, it's all the pollution we have + the addition of the pollution from every other stream and river that pours into it from Cincinnati on down! the estrogen worries me more than the heavy metals In that case you better move, since it's in your drinking water. Processing the water for consumption doesn't remove estrogen. but its also away from industry and such and it seems the water is much cleaner there as well as the fish Unfortunately, the Mon flows north from West Virginia, and the parts that seem furthest from industry are often the most polluted because that's where contaminants build up. Don't forget too that one of the main tributaries to the Mon on the WVa/PA border is Dunkard Creek, which is about as polluted as they come since the massive fish kill there in 2009. Every living thing in 35 miles of water was killed by water that runs directly into the Mon. And the Yough, which is the biggest tributary to the Mon is also becoming increasingly polluted. Total dissolved solids in the Yough have more than tripled since 2008. The Mon River is one of the 10 most endangered river in the entire country. Since 2008, the river has filled each summer with levels of contaminants higher than in at least 10 years. http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/news/pittsburgh/s_696233.html

I fish the Mon in Elizabeth quite often and even cruise down to where the yough meets. Never had a really good day on either, never could figure out any good patterns. Most of my luck has been after dark catching catfish and white bass under the lights by the tie off pillars for the barges. Anyone have any kind of consistancy in this area? Any tips you care to share? I dont shore fish, I fish from a boat, constantly moving from trees to grass, but I just cant figure it out

ORIGINAL: Snag_826 ill look out my office window and let u know...when are u launching? where ya gonna head to? Launched @ Riverfront Park in SSide. Fished along the Mon Wharf, down under the West End bridge, up past PNC Park, then back up the Mon by the Glenwood bridge. Had a little action up there but that was about it. Water was reading 56.7F on the fish finder...wow, its about flathead time already!! ORIGINAL: MeTaLaNgLeR I fish the Mon in Elizabeth quite often and even cruise down to where the yough meets. Mid summer I'll work alot between the barges and the shore right past the elizabeth bridge

I'll be on the Allegheny both today and tomorrow. Today I'm launching at Harmarville around 3:30 and staying until dark. Tomorrow, probably Sharpsburg depending on how I do this evening.

Heading to the Allegheny (from shore) early Saturday morning. I know it's going to pour Friday night and into Saturday but I've got the itch to fish and limited opportunity so we'll see what happens.

Whatever I can catch, primarily bass though. I typically throw spinnerbaits buzz baits rapalas and crank baits. Most be doing something wrong cuz I usually get skunked. I can catch catfish with no problem. But bass, I can't buy a bite most of the time

Fished the Mon Thursday evening from shore, across from the Waterfront. No bites again. I waded out up to my knees and the main river felt nice in the heat, but the water flowing from the creek/channel was much colder. I tried a bunch of the typical spring presentations (for bass). The river was flowing fast with tons of junk and debris floating down. Not as muddy as I expected though. I'm sure this weekend will change that. Looks like ugly weather for the better part of the next two weeks. I did see two fish caught by a group of guys fishing live bait. A small striped bass and I believe a little spotted bass. First fish I've seen caught this year! I'll probably hit Sharpsburg or Lock 3 tomorrow afternoon, although my buddy fished Sharpsburg yesterday with no luck, so I'm not getting my hopes up. Can't be long before the small mouth fishing takes off.

There is no dock yet at the Harmarville launch.

Fished the Mon again last night from about 5-7. Across from Waterfront again. Didn't catch anything, but great improvement in water clarity, flow and lack of debris. Finally seeing some baitfish activity too. There were many more people fishing the wall, creek and wading. It was almost too crowded. Saw a few more little spotted bass caught on rooster tails (figures I left mine at home after searching for about 10 minutes). Still no smallies. That rain should keep a few people away this weekend, including me.
