Flatheads are already biting. My brother caught a 20# on the Susquehanna last weekend. Catfish feed year round and some of the biggest fish have historically been caught in winter, especially February. FishinGuy: Nice catch on the goldfish bro! Very cool. being respectful. I must have missed that part. I've only seen braggadocio, talk a lot about what he obviously hasn't a clue, and outright refusal any opinions or advice that are contrary to his own established beliefs. Maybe I should get my glasses checked.

I understand you can catch flatheads round this time, but the frequency at which you catch them this time of year makes it not as desireable for me...rather fish for something else until the water warms up and catch rates start comming up as well...still gonna hit it today even with all the rain. Ill write a report later

Snag - Not sure where you are planning to go, but there was definitely enough rain to open up the combined sewers last night (at least here - South Hills). I'd definitely suggest heading away from town a bit if you guys got the same. During my river rattin' days, I'd wait at least 2 days after a soaker, if fishing within the city limits. Away from town a bit, there is a bit more dillution, but still rather sketchy if you are relatively close to one. Good luck, and hopefully no tampons. Got to clip the line on those...

Yeah I made that mistake once... ONCE! Them freaking tampon/toilet paper scraps really stick to braid. I clipped quite a bit of line that day.

hahahaha ya i grew up in the north hills and have gotten pretty used to the fishing line dingleberries over the years...I think were gonna still stay around the city and brave the crappy waters. Probable stick around the dams and see what we can drag up...my office is on 2nd ave and the mon is 50 feet outside my window and surprisingly it looks pretty good.

Koi (cyprinus carpio haematopterus) are a subspecies of common carp (cyprinus carpio). Koi just means "carp" in Japanese. Goldfish (carassius auratus auratus) are in the carp family, but come from the carassius genus. They were originally domesticated from the prussian carp (carassius gibelio), though was a long time ago. There are also crucian carp (carassius carassius), which are endemic to Europe and sometimes appear in waters here. Identification isn't too difficult. Koi are simply domesticated stock of the common carp. They have a downward mouth and prominent barbels that aren't seen on goldfish or crucians. They are typically vibrantly colored, but not always. If released into the wild, they will revert to their original coloration within a few generations. Goldfish have a more pointed face, and can vary in color from orange to silver to greenish-copper. They have 33 scales on their lateral lines. Crucian carp have a rounder face, but are always bronze. They have 31 scales on their lateral lines.

Trying to fish Somerset Lake while we still can, we caught 3 mud cats on chicken livers, the guy beside us caught a big channel. Otherwise nothing was biting yesterday and it was super choppy.

Thinking about taking the girlfriend out fishing Saturday. She wants to go so why not. I was thinking about taking her to Keystone State Park (not power dam) to fish, but the problem is I've never fished there. I know it's stocked with trout now which I'd like to target. She on the other hand likes to catch catfish, or anything with decent size to it. Anyone been there lately and can give any tips?

Broke 200 today. Also learned this year that if my child ever holds a bait pole I will brake all his fingers. Ive just found so much pleasure this spring fly fishing, idk just is like second nature. I do miss jigging and getting banged with spinners. Everyone should def be fishing tomorrow it's gonna be beautiful out

Easy buddy, bait or fly, there are great aspects of both. I took my kids fishing last weekend and we had a great time with some bait. Dont let your enthusiasm for fly fishing turn into hatin on other people's methods. There are some slob flyguys out there too. Congrats on catchin lotsa fish!

Hit Greenlick yesterday for first time out this year. Made some casts for about an hour. One small bass slowly working a zoom mini lizard along the bottom. Someone asked about carp...they were really active on the surface out there yesterday.

Wasn't hatin at all. I just don't want him to experience what I'm going through now. I'm very upset cause while my two buddies would beg me to get a fly pole I would say no its not worth it I enjoy this. But after these couple a weeks I just found it much smoother and rewarding that's all. Not hating, if I could go back and have someone give me a fly setup onstead of spinning I'd be thanking them in the long run. Just my opinion. Not hatIn on spin or baitfishing at all. Sorta miss it like I said I'll be going out today to film and get some shots for our YouTube channel

If you miss it, do both like I do. being able to use any kind of equipment is what makes a FISHERMAN (not a fly fisherman, spin fisherman, cpin fisherman etc) in my opinion. we all have different ways we prefer to take fish, but catching fish is my ultimate goal, so whatever setup is needed is what is to be used.

Fished sunday on the sharpsburgh pool...trolled around with four rods with my buddy...threw everything we had at em with no luck. Tossed some jigs around the barge tie off and boat docks at the crows nest...no bites/hits...NOTHING! other boats seemed to be having the same luck...getting frustrated. Any tips for this time of year would be appreciated, im not used to fishing on my boat this early in the year.
