I used to fish this lake almost every weekend about 10 years ago. My friends and I pulled quite a few monster slabs outta there. We also caught some huge 'eyes. I found a stump field there and had a banner day on giant smallies too. However, it's been a long time since I've fished there so I'd like to see this thread continue so that I could get updates on what the lake is producing. For the last couple of years I've heard nothing but bad reports about Keystone. That's too bad because when I was fishing it, this lake was awesome.

I fished it a decent amount last summer, caught some Muskies, and smallmouth, but never got a walleye.

I went when I was younger and catching huge walleyes was easier than following a stock truck. I dunno what happened.

Are the smelt in the cricks yet? I think I remembered reading something about this lake being loaded w rainbow smelt. I've never fished there but would love to have a few bags of smelt for flathead season.

Loomis, that's strange. Maybe they don't reproduce there. Were the eyes stocked back then? I used to nail them off of the back side of the hump where it drops down to 40FOW. What about the crappie? Any slabs? I heard the muskie bite was on last year, but they were all little ones. Did you catch any legal ones? The finger/bay on the right side of the lake, right before the dam was always the place to catch the slabs.

I don't know anything about the smelt. I know it was full of shad though. They would boil the surface of the water in a 30ft diameter circle. I've never seen anything like it. There had to be millions of them in one school.

You know what, I am not sure about the walleye stocking? I think someone did say that they were stocked then discontinued, don't quote me on that though.

from what I have been told trolling around that sunken island thingy in the middle is the way to go, but like I said, no dice for me.

The muskies I caught were all little guys, probably 24-28 inches. The bait store right on the way had some suckers we bought.

I have heard that the rainbow smelt are very plentiful.

That sunken island is what we always called "the hump." That's where I always caught them. On Memorial Day last year, my friends caught a bunch of muskies there that were the same size as the ones you caught.

Last year my wife caught a 38" purebred muskie there on a blade bait. We tried trolling there last Saturday with no luck. Fish were stacked in the 60'+ water by the dam and so were the baitfish. We could not get them to bite anything.

Loomis, like I said, it's been a while since I've been there. I do know that I've never fished deeper than 30'. The best day that I ever had there, I was in the deepest part of the lake and found a huge school of 14"-16" crappie suspended about 20' down. We killed 'em. The walleye were always caught off of the back side of the hump in about 40' of water. Our baits were never more than 20' down. We ran hot'n'tots mostly. Hope that helps. We would just troll in a circle around the hump.
