This is what I plan on using at Mingo on opening day. I've got my spey rod ready and a nice wading spot lined up in the middle of the hole under the covered bridge.

Thanks for the nice comments all. I have two fishn buddies who do up some super intruder styled flies. One some of you guys know, KJ from the site. They other most of you dont know, Justin from CRO. After fishing with the two of them I got inspired. As of late bcause of life I have really dumbed down, cheaped out, and sped up my flies. They catch fish just fine and just as many as my buddies, but dont hold a candle to the wow factor of theirs. I got a big trip coming up next fall. A trip deserving of flies of the wow factor. So it looks like I may have to set aside some time to get them done up right. Thanks for the inspiration guys.

To my NY Crew. I dont know if you guys really want some of these. Just remember that Spey Co reel that the fly is strapped to is a full 4". These bugs aint no babies. Bring out the t14 or zinc 15 to flip these babies over. I havent read the new regs on your main water yet, are the lead eyes permitted these days? Hope all is well with you guys. I cant wait to fish with you again. If you ever want to come spend a day in my state you better get in contact with me. We are going to have that casting event again this spring I cant remember the date off the top of my head. I think its right around Easter again. Not only will you have the top casters in my area giving out free advice Neil Houlding and his Candian friends are coming down as well. I'll let you guys know.

Pick pick pick pick pick pick pick pick. Thats what you have to do with fox. If you dont mind using nontrendy materials try craft fur. Sht rocks and e z to use.

I have increased my picking, but maybe not enough.

I'm a big fan of craft fur, using it a ton lately.

for AF i've moved to picking a brushing

make big loops and really spread the material
then take you scissors an make some cuts parallel to the material about half the distance deep to the thread
    spin 1/2 the full spin
run a bodkin parallel to the thread pulling trapped fibers
spin more.. repete the pick... continue until you are fully spun
the get out the brush... stiff plastic budding brush OR a cheap-o stiff tooth brush
    bush away
you know when you are done... because the thread is back to original diameter

    Swinger and kjh,

I spun some craft fur last night, and I believe your two latest posts have helped tremendously.

One question: what way to you place the craft fur/hair in the dubign loop prior to spinning without it making a giant mess? Do either of you use one of those "magic tools", or I'm sure there is a trick to keeping it in the loop without it getting all jacked up? Or, maybe that's just a part of it, expect 25% wasted fur falling on the table?

i don't have one of those fancy tools... but know where you can get one

loosing material to the brush is a good thing
if you think you are loosing too much... spin tighter and keep strong tension when brushing

i stay away from wax in my loops... it binds the material

i load the material in the loop with as much spacing as I can get by hand
then move and spread the material with a bodkin
then do the trimming to release any material that is caught up during the spacing

How often do you cut your dubbing loop thread, when trimming, and lose everything?

    Be honest!

my issues were with breakage when i was tying with 14/0
i've moved over to doing all my loops with the Marc Petitjean Bobbin... seriously a game changer

I maybe doing it all wrong but I never cut my dubbing loop. I dont even think I ever even put myself into a position to cut the loop. How do you do that?

Clumsy? A few beers/shine/assorted other things into the evening? Not paying attention? Hurrying? You name it.

Trimming hair or wool or clipping feathers I cut the thread and the bobbin falls to the table at least once every couple weeks.
