Im sorry but Frank Nales post seems excessive and even a little silly. IMHO I think its a load of crap and is being posted to spark a reaction out of everyone. If it is true, he should be a record holder for highest average catch rate (100 fish per day for the last decade!?!?! seriously???). Hope he doesnt come to Erie any time soon...he will be able to not only catch every fish that enters each trib but will also be able to measure and record it in only 6.234 hours. Still an interesting read.

Agreed. I think it's a load of crap too.

He's got a product to sell, and he posts outrageous numbers in order to help push that product.

Actually he is a local from near me and he does catch that many trout.  Has for years.  Most are wild fish caught on a spinner.  His brother does that as well and catches just as many.

The poster formally known as Duncsdad

Everything I say can be fully substantiated by my own opinion.

Say what you want, I know him personally and is actually a great guy. Honest and does exactly what he says. He sells his homemade spinners very reasonable and will answer any questions anybody has. He hols seminars throughout the year to help in casting techniques, reading streams etc. He will not tell you the streams he fishes but when you go to a small creek and see his vehicle, you are in for a great day as long as you are not behind him. His friend, although does not use his spinners, catches similar numbers and the goal is 100 trout a day. I have fished with him and he kicks my butt. Spent the weeknend with him at a small wild trout stream and we together caught 135. I was at 40. He can cast like I have never seen. Pulls fish from where I would never attempt to cast. Very very fast paced and they cover a lot of stream. Believe it or not, whatever you want, but straight up this guy can fish. Period.

Im sure this guy can fish, no doubt, but dont you think the whole idea of fishing is skewed when you keep track of the exact number you catch every day? Seems a little un-necessary to brag to everyone how great you are. Regardless,im trying to think of where you can go and consistently catch that many fish year after year...Even the most remote natural producing trout streams can be fished out in a matter of months if you target them as hard as he does (esp after finding out that he fishes on public waterways). Id love to learn the secret. Where can you purchase one of these spinners? Have to try them out for myself.

"My best day yielded 222 wild browns and one stocked rainbow in 10.50 hours".
"The highlight of the month was having four consecutive outings where I caught over 200 trout, all wild browns except for a lone stocked rainbow. I caught 246, 241, 216, and 219 on June 16th, 18th, 19th, and 20th, respectively".

+1 on being a load of crap.

I believe you can find his email address on one of his posts. It was FrankTroutAngler@aol.com Not sure if it is still current though. Also, as far as keeping track and numbers and stuff, you see the show Big Bang Theory Sheldon????? Nuff said. Great guy though and it is not meant to brag if you know him and have talked to him. I do understand though how some would think that. The last time I bought his spinners, they were only 1.50 each but the metal has gone up quite abit since then. As I said earlier, it is not all in the spinner but the stream he chooses and they way he fishes. I have used them for steelhead and had some success. You see him on the stream, you would never know he was a really good fisherman. Dresses like a ordinary guy with hip boots, makes his own rods, suitable for his casting and height and probably has less than 50.00 in his total gear. Don't need a 800.00 rod or 300.00 chest waders or a 100.00 vest. He just catches fish.

One of two things is happening here.

    1. These numbers are just estimates of how many times the same group of fish was caught over and over again. Certainly one can't feel each fish (especially multiple days in a row) coming from the same group of water is different than the other.

    2. Or by some strange coincidence this many fish are actually being caught. But if that's the case how is it even fun anymore? Where's the enjoyment in doing something that you've done 900 times in 4 days?

Why is this a strange coincidence?
In my former "trout bum days" I have had many 100-fish days. I know many others that have done the same.

You believe in just 4 days time over 900 fish were caught? Let me say that again...900 fish! I've never personally had a day of 100 fish, but I wouldn't discredit anyone that said they have. The reason for that being 100+ does seem possible.

    900 fish!

BS. Even with 10 hour days you're talking 1 fish almost every minute!

It'd be hard to make numbers like that even if you were fishing in the hatchery! Just for the sheer work of it. Then sustained over 4 days? I don't think so.
