Plastics for steelhead
Anybody fish plastics or have much luck with them? I've picked up a decent number of steel on trout magnets and power worms. I've never fished the powerworms berkley makes specifically for steelhead, as they are HUGE (4-5"). I think they're more aimed at people out west? I can't imagine throwing something like that here. I've also done well on anise rubber eggs, which were popular years ago. Used to pick up a lot of fresh fish on them. You don't see them too much anymore. I've been thinking that there is a whole largely unexplored avenue here. With moldable plastics, scents, etc., the possibilities are nearly endless. Why don't more guys try them out? Or do they and I'm just missing it?

Give it a shot. Who knows it might work. I'm sure the fish get a bit tired of seeing the same things float passed their face constantly.

They're just dumb fish. When the bite is on they'll hit some downright silly stuff.I caught a trout on a rooster tail that had a 7 inch bass worm coming out of it's mouth.

Well there's definitely something to it all. I've seen guys catch 5-10 fish in a span of a few hours while the rest of us stood around catching nothing. I don't think it's as simple as the bite being on or off. If it was why would anyone buy expensive lures? You could just put some bubble gum on the hook, right?

"You could just put some bubble gum on the hook, right?" Juicyfruit & Teaberry gum are deadly And yes, I'm almost serious. I've seen Steelhead bite gum, foil from a cigarette pack, yarn tied in a bow around a hook, floats, etc. They are fish. At any given time they'll bite ANYthing that looks/smells like it might be food.

i have caught fish on little minnow jigs, mini grubs, and small power worms when flyguys around me weren't catchin any. Aaannnndd, ive been skunked when the flydudes were crushin em! Moral of the story-ALMOST ANYTHING, fished with decent presentation, will catch the steelies.

Not sure what their verdict was on these then. As for plastics, I used to have great luck on those plastic trout worms from Poor Richards. I rarely steelhead fish now, but did pick up some Eagle Claw scented trout worms that work great for dressing crappie jigs. I couldn't see why they wouldn't work for steelhead, if they are in the mood. About half the price of the Berkley power worms.

Pork, I've fished those eagle claw trout worms. They are a deeper/darker pink than the berkeley bubble gum. I did have success with them on steel. I am very interested to see how the 4" yamasenkos will work though
