Line for spin gear
I know this subject has been covered before but I need help/advise.I use a 10' rod to run a float or bottom bounce,8 1/2' on creeks. I run main line to a small barrel swivel then 2-3' of flouro leader that is at least 2 lbs. lighter.Main line is high vis -blood knot-6-8' regular mono then the swivel. My question is what brand? weight? Hi-Vis helps me follow the drift. Had problems with twist ,memory and line jumping off reel in severe cold.Underfilling reel a little seems to help a lot.Would lighter line help in keeping line taught through the entire drift? Is poor technique the more likely problem?

Pete,it's been awhile that I used a spin rod on the SR but here is my take on it.Main line 10# to small black barrel swivel then lighter flora tippet. To detect light hits when bottom bouncing keep finger contact with line. Also not filling spool to top is the way to go.

Pete. I have not had any problems using trileine ( sp) XT CLEAR in 8# as main line. I can see the clear pretty well. Once I spool it up then I drop the spool in a warm cup of water to take any memory out . Question: why are you tying a splice in on main line? Because of high vis? Also where are you putting weight , above swivel or a tag off swivel ? Some of those factors will cause severe line twist .

My set up is the following , and I have zero issues with line twists etc.. Main line is 6lb Sufix hi vis to a quality barrel swivel( like the new Mustad or Spro cam style , size 12 or 14). Then either 4 ft Maxima chameleon (4 or 5lb) or 6lb Floro leader . As for the weight either shot right above the barrel or sliding weight above the barrel. Make sure to put the line on from the bottom of the filler spool , reel on about 20 % and check if it coils flip filler spool and do another 20% and see which is doing best , but most of the time coming from the bottom when spooling spinning gear is the best and from the top when spooling a baitcaster(conventional) reels. I change my line about ever 6 to 10 days on the river another reason to use suffix it is only 7.99 for 330 yards , I ususal put on about 110 of new line so I can get 3 fills per spool. I tried the berkley micro ice line this year and that was pretty good also , but still prefer the sufix . I fill my spools completely and use my hand to close the bail, snapping the the bail closed with the reel handle and reeling while line is going out against the drag are the two biggest reason for line twists. hope this helps. I am still a 90/10 guy but have always used 10 lb trilene xl on my noodle. Sometimes the green color gets a bit tough to see but then I never use a bobber anyhow and the line is in the water. I just follow the pull of the water with the rod - seem to do just fine and always let it tail straight back and hang a bit before reeling in for the next cast. Think the light weights right on the main line reduce twisting too. Occasional hits along side the bank when doing that too. The xl rarely gets too much spin on it but it doesnt hurt to let it tail off in the edge and run it through your fingers onto the spool now and again and let the bait hang a bit to get excess curl out of the line- if it happens. Only use it for sacs and garden hackle and generally in quicker water too both Fall and Spring fishing - perhaps that makes it more tangle free for me- never seem to need a swivel and never therefore use a lighter tippet either. If the day requires seams and slower water - fly rod. This sometimes requires different techniques in different spots and sometimes have then need to change rods depending on where I'm gonna fish. Suppose might try and have a lighter tippet if winter fishing with it but in Spring and Fall that never seems to be such a big issue in faster water.

Tuna, spliced due to hi-vis.Running bright orange to two feet of hook just didn't seem right.I have been using a tag when bottom bouncing so weight can be pulled off when hung up. (obviously). I think you just helped a lot by asking that question.

Is poor technique the more likely problem? the colder it is - line twist will be more of a problem - regardless of brand - it is SCIENCE (Temp Effect on Co-polymer building blocks of plasteec(nylon) line. Line Jumping - you are reeling in water droplets, which turn into ice crytals, which freezes(welds) your line together on spool, then "pops" it loose when bail trigger is pulled back and casted, Recommended recourses: 1) fish when it's warmer, or 2)fish with a pin outfit , keeping the line off the water (#1 reason why pins are superior in brutal conditions).. p.s. specialty lines made for pin usage (e.g. Siglon - not recomended on spinning reel - will result in birdsnest's galore in no time flat - regardless of how it is spooled onto reel). (tried it, learned via failed experiment). just sayinz...

Pete, my main line I spooled up recently is a trilene fluoro...not the vanish as I told you the other day... I find eventually, no matter what you do, line will eventually start to coil up on you no matter what. Rather than stripping the line off and replacing, I will let a large amount of line go downstream from me with nothing on the end of it. I then reel it back up while pinching the line with fingers or against the cork. This allows any coiling to untwist and also gives you a nice tight spool. I usually do this every other outting and it helps a lot. If your fishing a heavily pressured section, simply have a fishing partner pull out 50 or so yards in the parking lot and then just reel back in. You will achieve the same result.

Loved it but nothing compares since.. And yes fly guys blood their knots... So that is not what I see as a cause.. CLEAR XT is good enough to see, green sucks, red sucks.. 2. The Weight, Swivel deal.. If using a tag or slinky off a swivel keep it on the Tippet side for sure.. Very important !! Just some pointers.. removeable shot causes twist, round is better but forceps need to be handy. Go as light as possible, to much weight causes twist.. 3. if running a float rig then stagger your shot along the leader & tippet.. 1 3/0 near the float and smaller down the tippet.. Need not much.. The soaking of mono works wonders.. esp. fresh line.. Peace & Tuna

Clint-FYI-I attended a Bass Clinic a few years ago and the guest speaker was Hank Parker. Parker, who is a Berkley rep, said that he thought Vanish was the worst line Berkley ever made because it had poor knot strength. At that time Berkley 100% Flourocarbon Professional Grade had just come out and he recommended that over anything else.

That is a bit of info I will hold onto and see what it brings. So far I have had quite good luck with it and I make my leaders with it too. I have not had any knot failures, BUT I have only hook a few wish with it. I am using a surgeons loop knot for the loop and an Albright knot to join them

I always said "if it isn't broken, don't fix it." I must admit I was surprised that Parker would bite the hand that feeds.

Once again, thanks for solid advise from all. I will be changing some of my set up but think I need to get into the fly gear. Just hate to spend valuable time up there screwing up to learn.Plan to hit it hard in coming six weeks.By hard I mean maybe four more trips.Maybe suicide day trips but still time on the water.

Pete= always used the fly rod for bait- been a coupla years now with flies and its a Hoot. Kinda an old dog-new trick thing goin on here. Just as long as ya realize you arent gonna catch as many fish this way -at least for a while - its OK. BTW-have more luck runnin sacs with the fly rod than I ever did with the spin rigs.

I have had better hook up rates and can cover more water with my spin rod. I tend to use it more in the cold as it is easier to cast bundled up and so far it does not ice up as much as the fly rod. That said I really enjoy the fly rod and may be upgrading this summer to something better if funds allow. It is especially satisfying to tie your own flies and catch a fish in them too.

Fly fishing is A-OK, but a skilled, experienced bottom bouncer will outfish the flyfisher any day - all day, and work the waters much more effectively.. (not talkin dry-fly sipper fish - obviously,, just sayin IMO

Drake- Generally may well agree that the spinner can out fish the fly guy in places with sacs -specially fishing runs from the side like in faster water- but it may also depend on how you like to fish. Have had great luck with sacs on the noodle over time on the SR. in runs fishing from shore or just off shore. However I like to fish them like garden hackle in a small stream a lot when going along logs or into jams or under overhangs, Do this on the larger Sr too when 'reading' the water and fishing structure.. In my style I fish those conditions most often from above with a more or less downstream drift. I find the fly line VERY maneuverable in the current and thus far more able to be put into position using that current to help line up my drift approach. Can often kinda slowly 'walk' the sac into the desired location that way insteada just runnin it by with the spin line. Since Steel are often relating to structure just like other stream fishes this makes this rod and style very effective for me. Would be sooprized how often one can catch fishies BEHIND other guys standin out there spinning the runs. That style also almost completley eliminates snagging a fish. Different strokes-dont need to pile them up to have a great day either sometimes even when its HOT just like to sit back and watch the show.
