Beer on The Bay

Are you allowed to have beer on the ice or on a boat in the bay?

Yes. Except on, or within 500 ft of the penninsula.

That's a pretty stupid thing to do on the ice. Alcohol will lower your body temperature and will put you at a much higher risk of hypothermia.

When ice fishin why not. Hey if I fall in hypothermia is going to get me anyway . A couple brews on the ice is o.k . I don't drink in the boat , but there are circumstances when drinking and fishin do jive.

Um? Because it's usually cold above the ice as well. On the bay, sometimes brutally cold.

That said coffee, and cigarettes ( my vices ) can restrict blood flow to the extremities, increasing risk of frostbite. Anyway you look at it, you're skrood.

Hypothermia, in most cases isn't even the main cause of death in falling through the ice even though this is beside the point. Drowning and losing consciousness should be the first concerns, if you fall in first thing is getting your arms up on the ice. You can actually survive quite a while in the water

They react irrationally and start jumping up and down losing their body heat. Drinking while on thin ice is obviously idiotic, but if you were sober and knew what you were doing then that's not your biggest concern

Actually, the shock of cold and going under and your body reflexively taking a deep breath is what will get you the quickest on that initial plunge. Best to try and keep your head above water on that first dunking. You can "hang out n'at" for quite some time until the rescue folks make their way to you or you use your spikes that are around your neck to pull yourself out. You guys do carry spikes on a lanyard around your neck on iffy ice, don't ya?

As far as drinking on the ice, if I am on a place with safe ice and where I can build a fire, I'm gonna have a good time.

To those of you that posted about falling in or catching hyopthermia on topside: I asked if it is legal to have beer on the bay, not "Hey I wanna go out on 3 inches of ice on the bay and get drunk and jump up and down to see how strong the ice is."

I would obviously only get wasted on the ice if it was thick - safe ice. As for hypothermia topside - that's what they make shantys and buddy heaters for, right?

So I guess Spponchucker answered my question - Next time the bay has 6" plus of ice I will take a bunch of beer out from the city side, staying 500' away from the peninsula, and get WASTED in my shanty. Sounds like a good day on the bay.
