letter
Decided to write a letter to the NY State folks in charge of LE on the SR- gotta find the proper address and title for that LE agency-- Gonna be very short and to the point- "Please strictly enforce littering statutes on the Salmon River - the place is turning into a garbage dump and strict enforcement may help. Quite frankly improvement on this issue alone will so enhance the Salmon River experience that other enforcement issues may well diminish as the result. If nothing else the entire ecosystem will be better off. Thank you for your attention to this matter- it has become the BUZZ subject for many fishermen on the river , your cooperation would be appreciated and noticed by all."

The irony is that whoever reads that letter will toss it straight to the trashcan.

Agree, at this point I would rather see littering tickets given instead snagging tickets. The place is a garbage dump, and people do not care. Maybe if they lost their license for a bit they would think twice or better yet 40 hours of garbage pick up or you lose it.

Any police officer/sheriff or peace officer can enforce EnCon violations. The issue of dealing with littering is not just for EnCon.

Lets face a fact here- we complain bout this to each other and each other agrees- preachin to the Choir so to speak-- That dont get the job done so lets at least go out and be able to say we sent a lousy letter to those with the juice to really have an impact- ya know ---nothin ventured nothin lost--- The more I think about it the more I think I may hand deliver mine over at that Training Facility next trip up---Those LE guys are right there at the river. You lurkers who can post on any other forums please do likewise and post this there too- Who knows??

The way I see it.......you need a hunter safety course, your need a boating safety course....how about a fishing courtesy course! Give me room, pack your garbage out and enjoy the day. These littering violations unfortunately are low on the list of witnessed violations. Most of it has to do with upbringing. Dad throws hit garbage, Jr. does the same. From a cops perspective, do you want to give out tickets or make criminal arrests......arrests.

Fishing education course? It will a cold day in Haydes b4 I submit myself to a nonsensical fishing class that is totally unnecessary if the powers that be actually performed their duties. (and I don't buy the normal bureaucratic excuse of not enough manpower). With all due respect JCY - your idea penalizes everyone due to the actions of the undesirables - and I must call BS on that. We all know, - the major SR hotspots for trash dumping and illegal snagging. And LEO does also. Both problems can easily be nipped in the bud, and IMO there is simply no excuse as to why it has not been. RT: I wish you the best with that letter.

How about an e-mail with all our signatures? I know it's been done in other applications. Or pasting RT's onto numerous ones sent to the DEC. I saw very little in the areas I fished. I could honestly say the guys that walked by me this weekend were not the type to throw garbage. We voted down allowing any fast food franchises in our small town (they tried hard to put a Mickey D's near the school) to keep the garbage out! It's a pervasive mentality that extends beyond the riverside. If some fast food franchises and major beer companies did a little educational campaign, it would go a long way. That's the free market solution. Fat chance that'll happen. Charlie

By this time of year Charlie think the winds rains and high water have generally washed away a lot of the carp. When walking the river in Summer throwin stuff around for smalies or even a Atlantic ( nutty effort) there is little litter still around. Soon as even rumors of fish start the slobs quickly follow. The big floods really cleared it out but the knowledge that so much went into the lake was disturbing.

Litter is everywhere 'cause lazy ignorant slobs are everywhere and there is very little punishment doled out to stop it.One way to curtail it would be to have a deposit on all containers of plastic/metal/and styro foam.If it cost 20-30 cents to throw them down many would rethink that,if they still discard it there would be those that pick it up to cash it in.This would be the solution to it.

E Mailed a more detailed letter to the NY DEC region 7 office in Syracuse this AM.- Will do it again in a month or so. - Still gonna follow up with the other letter too. -May well call the Chief in Pulaski concerning local enforcement. More I think bout it madder I get. Although I agree bout the deposit thing have never seen money make idiots not be idiots. It is easier for them to drop a styro coffee cup or worm box than go to a store and get a .50 return. Slobs. LOVE the concept of putting littering fisherman on Facebook.( other forum post)

Very Impressed with region 7 response- Letter already forwarded to LE and fisheries Div. Their response was super quick and very nice. Imagine if they got a few dozen or more asking for litter enforcement ?? Just perhaps---

ORIGINAL: dimebrite Trev, good job, positivity has a snow ball effect as does negativity... go ahead and post that link up... maybe even share with us the dialogue you used so we can hit them with similar angles... Job well done I've thought about doing this, so thanks for the push. I know Dime gave you permission to post the link, so I hope it's alright with him. Sent to - reg7info@gw.dec.state.ny.us This letter is to hopefully inform the DEC and appropriate law enforcement agencies as to the economic and enviormental consequences of the enormous amounts of trash being deposited on the banks of the Salmon River. It has been widely discussed and is a issue of great importance to many fisherman, both resident and non-resident. If the current trend continues without abatement , economic consequences will inevitably result. I myself, for example, stayed away from the river for many years, due to trash and the snagging mentality. I've recently returned to fish in the winter and regularly spend several hundred dollars with local businesses. I'm considering stopping again, as the trash is absolutely disgusting and intolerable.I've had conversations with many, from as far away as North Carolina and California that feel the same. It stands to reason, with enforcement and fines, signage and education, this trend can be stopped or at least moderated. I know of many , like myself, that have participated in clean-ups, individually and with groups. It is very disheartening to see the trash appear very shortly after an area is cleaned. I am hoping that budgetary constraints can be overcome with rigorous application of fines for littering and some consideration of the economy this fishery generates. It's my hope and wish that this letter, and all like it , be passed on to other enforcement agencies for their consideration. Thank you kindly for your good service to the public and the enviorment Charles Lapinski

Very professional and to the point... This is not the thread for it. And you're right, I wouldn't throw random insults. Life's too short to have people F... with your head. It did sound like you were granting permission for Trev to post a link... I hope alot of us write in. Maybe I can get a flyshop In Manchester VT, that has an SR fan for an owner and the Orvis flagship store (guys that run it are friends of mine and fish the SR every year) to put up petitions to send. As soon as I find the most appropriate place to send them and get some ideas, I'll do it. It doesn't hurt to have people out of state that are spending bucks on out of state licenses and lodging etc... to have a voice. I would think you guys that are property owners should have even more clout. Maybe we can figure out how to make the biggest bat possible. Charlie

Would love to help and not afraid to rattle some cages. If someone more articulate than myself could send a carelully (effective) petition I will try to get as many signatures as I can at the Harrisburg show. I think you may be onto something here aka: Occupy SR.

Any ideas gladly accepted. Trev, you have lots of good ideas and a working knowledge of how gears get turned. I'll help, do research , do some leg work. If in the end we convince a hundred or more lazy worthless co..su...s to pick up their beer and burger trash we'll have done a stroke of good business. I can only make a vague guess how many decent guys there are to POS trash-holes. Anybody got an idea? Charlie

I know the Occupy SR was a joke but even a mention of stuff like that on the other end is a real deal breaker. Those folks are doin the job they are assigned to do. Its the 'assigners' who we are writing to simply requesting a priority shift. We live in an age of E- mails, thats how my letter got around so fast today. That said regular letters and petitions are great. A multi faceted approach signifies that there is more than one source of discontent and may well be quite productive.

ORIGINAL: fichy Anybody got an idea? Charlie Here's an idea that may work better than petitions to urge the govt to fix the problem. Try the Quazi Private Enterprise/Govt approach instead: Campaign several local businesses, and the SR Guide Assoc, and the DEC for their blessing: Ever see them Adopt a Highway Signs?- where a non-profit group or private business takes care of trash pickup on a stretch of public roadway? Do the same thing, but apply it to the hard hit trashdumps along the SR - Wires, Trestle, Ballpark, Pineville, or others. DEC supply & install the highly visible signs so the group/store gets some free adverstising and goodwill, the signs may make the littering cork-slurper think b4 they drop trash also. I think such a plan just might work, and IMO, it is the least the local businesses and guides can do - give something back to the reources that they make their ching from. Actual personnel to do the actual cleanup? A store (instead of closing up to do the cleanup with their own employees) can post a sign out front several weeks in advance advertising their upcoming cleanup, and offer any customers who participate a gift cert - which can be written off as a business expense. that's my 2 cents worth.

ORIGINAL: retired guy   We live in an age of E- mails, thats how my letter got around so fast today.    e-mails are a great way for someone to get it off their desk onto to another's - without even leaving their chair.. Believe me, I deal with it everyday when trying to get answers from client's underling employees... I agree with Metal - single letters are more effective, even the old fashioned type that require a stamp - they have to actually open the envelope and read it, and they stack up before they are read.

I'm thrilled to know that I won't be caring an empty plastic bag with me this from now on. Email sent. I'm sure this one will have more inpact than the last one. It also got a nicely worded response. The second one got the exact same nicely worded response. It was encouraging to know that someone is taking the time to rewrite the same response, word for word, to different Emails.
