Yes, and I'd do it again. Once upon a time I received my hunting license back to me in the mail. Since then I've passed it on once for hunting and twice for fishing license.

I will bet you can not find even one person in this state that EVER got cited for picking up a lost hunting license and turning it in to the WCO or returning it to the rightful owner. Now if you are out hunting and come up with the story that you just found your wife’s or some other family member’s lost license I would expect you to have a lot more questions to answer though. WCO's are pretty good at sorting out reality from fair-tails and people that work in reality do not have to worry about getting cited when they are doing the right thing like returning a lost license. How do you propose it being determined who is in violation and who is not if Officers don’t have encounters with those that at first appearance seem to be doing something illegal? Should Officers not check licenses to seek out those that don’t have one, have put their used rags back in to use again, don’t have tags at all, don’t have the archery, muzzleloader or bear permits, a borrowed license or perhaps a non-resident who is actually hunting with an illegal resident license? Or I guess perhaps Officers should just go out and wave and smile at everyone instead of protecting the resources some of us enjoy hunting? R.S. Bodenhorn

All you are doing is returning it back to the owner, no big deal. As long as you are not hunting with it, you're not breaking the law. I once found a kid's wallet in a parking lot and everything was taken from it except for his ID. I gave it to the Police dept. and that was that. I did no crime. RSB is right, nobody is going to do any thing to you, unless they feel you are up to something.

I almost got arrested for picking up trash once Notice the KEY WORD == ALMOST !!!! evidently the LEO found you were doing nothing wrong after looking into it, just as one would do if someone found a lost hunting or fishing license... and was planing on returned it to the owner... in fact a WCO could probably help in returning it even faster... he could run the cid# and even get the address of the owner for you....

I wouldn't hesitate to pick it up and return it. I'd simply put it in a pocket or pin it on the inside of my hunting jacket when carrying it out. If stopped, how would a WCO even know that you're carrying it unless you tell him? When did the WCO's start doing a complete body search? Besides that, what are the chances of running into a WCO after you found someone's lost license? It's slim to none where I hunt in 2B.

Why does it cost you , I believe $6 to get a replacement when the info is in the computer at the store that you payed for it all ready ? you should be able to go back and get a reprint for the 75 cents agent fee.

Youze Guyz Gotta Give RSB a break!!!!! he's one of the good guyz - he takes care of the warm furry critters.. On the other hand, the PFC dudez, (da ones that take care of slimy, cold-blooded critterz) - they are hardcore when it comes to fishing license scoundrels.. I know this first hand: Several years ago, my fishing license & holder came unattached from my hat after I got swiped by a tree branch. I watched it float away downstream around the curve.. I decided to take my time, fish down to it, and hopefuly find it washed up soemwhere. I made it around the stream bend and lo & behold, there's Mr. Fishcop talking to a racoon - who picked up my license and was using it to pry open a mussel shell. He then turns to me, and asks me for my license... Ooopsy - did I have some splainin to do. Well, at least he bought my story about the tree branch swipe. He took the license from Mr Coon, matched it up to me, told me to have a good day, then hauled Rocky Racoon away in cuffs for impersonating a 2 legged trout fisherman..

Losing a license may be less of a problem with not needing to display it since it will not be exposed and as prone to catching on things. If it is in your wallet and you lose it, you now have bigger issues than replacing a hunting license.

Had a fishing license come up missing off my hat hanging in a mudroom to a farmhouse 3 other guys and I rented in the early 80,s. Come to find out at one of our poker game nights an acquaintance stopped over to visit one of guys I rented with and on his way out he took the time to remove it from my hat and then leave! I thought I had lost it somewhere after looking all over for it. Got a replacement 5 or 6 bucks?in Edinboro and forgot about it.About 6 weeks later I received a summons to appear down at the Edinboro campus at the fish and boat commission office because I was accused of lending my license to a guy that was caught with a stringer of trout at mallory's run. After a heated confrontation with the fish officer He understood I did in fact not lend it to the person using it. What a hassle.

I can just see some jumpy game commissioner officer place his hand on his side arm when I reach for my wallet. He may think I'm reaching for a gun, and plug me full of lead. I seriously don't want that to happen!!!

You're most likely already holding a loaded rifle, or shotgun. Why would he get "jumpy" over your reaching for your wallet?

Now you have a choice. If you want to leave it displayed, you can. If you don't you don't need to. This satisfies both factions. On a serious note, however, Doc, just how often do you get checked that this was really an issue? Don't you know most of the WCO's where you hunt? Why would these people, who know you very well, keep wanting to check your license? This is no reflection at all on you personally, but since I have only been checked once in nearly 40 years of hunting (have only seen a WCO twice in that time), I don't see it as a major issue and with your relationship with the WCOs, it should be a non-issue.

My question is, " why would you want to turn your back on an armed man"? At least while I'm reaching for my wallet I cant be shot in the back! I've been checked three times in my life. 2 times while hunting, those 2 times I took my jacket off and handed it too the officer. The 1st time he told me that would not be necesarry, and he tried to go around my back and remove my license from the holder. I insisted and took my coat off anyway. Last time I was checked was at the rifle range a few months ago. I had my license pinned to my ammo bag. Officer asked to see it, I pointed to my bag and said it's right there. He looked at me as if he was waiting for me to take it out of the holder. I said again " It's right there " and proceeded to dial my 300 in.

I've been checked (I Think)three times in 58 years. It's going to stay on my back because I change hunting coats less often than I transfer my wallet from one pants to another. Wallet or back is no big deal to me but I do like the choice.

Since in the past 7-8 years my #1 spots to hunt deer are behind my home, I get checked very little ... poor access from SGL parking areas.. second best spots are all at clear creek and I have NEVER been checked over there... in fact have not seen the local WCO there.. but that does not mean he does not patrol there.... before that I would get checked almost every year hunting SGL#54 at least once by the local WCO ... show my license, let him check my gun and then a little time BSing... Believe me ... when I tell you the WCOs I know are straight shooters.. I get no pass just because they know me... If I was breaking a game code I would get fined just like the next guy...
