Favorite Turkey Rifle
The other post has spurred my interest in turkey rifles. I have never hunted in a zone where they are legal so this would be a first. .22 Mag, 17HMR, 22 Hornet, Loaded down varmit rifles? THanks.w_w.
If it has fins and gills, I'm there.

I hope turkey rifles never come into 2B. I've only hunted for 10 years and the changes that have happened over those years is a shame. Ed

Same, I wonder what a .22 would be like? Would you aim for the head?

Any rifle that will kill a woodchuck is capable of killing a turkey at the same range. I consider a 22 mag or hornet on the light side (especially on gobblers). They will kill a turkey but plan on losing some. A 220, 222, 223,etc with a good scope is deadly on any size turkey. I would expect the .17 to be enough gun but have never tried one on turkey. I do tend to agree with retired guy on rifles though, the fun is in tracking or calling, if you just want a bird, the ones from Tops or Wal-Mart taste better with less waste.

ORIGINAL: S-10 A 220, 222, 223,etc with a good scope is deadly on any size turkey. Now, if we could just get semi auto legal I could take the AR-15 for a walk instead of the .17. I have a Encore in 22/250 that may see some time.
My rifle is a black rifle

The last time I heard an AR-15 going off was in a swamp near Warren Ohio, within 15 minutes there was a number of screaming police cars surrounding the area and a police helicopter with a megaphone in the sky above us. It did get some deer moving however. I don't think the shooter was quite ready for the fuss he caused.

I used a old Rem.model 721 in a 222 in the big woods of Potter Co. years ago. I shot a few out to 200 yds in fields. It stones them, but its more like target or chuck shooting, not really turkey hunting. I learned to call and it was way more fun.Even in the fall season birds can be called in, best is the locate a flock and scatter them up, them give them 30-45 min. and yelp them in.I've killed over 30 fall turkeys doing this,no.4 coppers 12 3 in. Rem 1187 it still my favorite turkey gun.

I can tell you what a .17 and a .204 do to turkeys...don't hit them anywhere NEAR the breast! Ironhed

I can tell you what a .17 and a .204 do to turkeys...don't hit them anywhere NEAR the breast! I thought that might be the case with their speed. That's the problem, most rifles that will kill them dead will also destroy a lot of meat unless you hit them just right. Doesn't make for a very good hero shot when your holding half in each hand.
