There was access to the railroad maintenance road near the Rt. 79 and Rt. 51 (I think it is Rt. 51. Right before you cross the bridge over the Ohio) interchange. I checked it a few months ago and it was chained. Too bad. That area was awesome.

If you have access to a boat, you can go up and beach on the southside of the channel right before the large rocks on shore that lead up to the dam. Smallmouth, largemouth, sauger, walley and stripers are all through there.

If you're talking about the area I think you are, its railroad land. I would agree with you if it were private land owned by an individual or even a company, but its owned by the railroad. Railroad lines run up and down both sides of almost every major river in the country. I wouldn't exactly call crossing railroad tracks trespassing...

I really beg to differ with you!
Are you saying that railroad land is public land???

It is property that IS owned by a company. That company is the railroad!

CSX is a privately owned company that is traded on the stock market - NOT GOVERNMENT OWNED!
NS is a privately owned company that is traded on the stock market - NOT THE GOVERNMENT!
WNYPA is a privately owned company - NOT THE GOVERNMENT!

Your front yard is privately owned - NOT THE GOVERNMENT!

Privately owned is private property...if a person is there without permission...THEY ARE TRESPASSING - PLAIN AND SIMPLE!
If you had dozens of people walking through your yard, littering, damaging things, parking in your driveway in a manner that blocked you out - wouldn't you put up a chain???

I work for a railroad, my paycheck comes from the COMPANY (not the government) that owns the tracks, the access roads, the bridges...
I deal with "trespassers" on almost a daily basis...and yes, I kick them out and advise them if they come back they will be cited by the police for trespassing.

By the way, the RR that I work for does have tracks that run along the Allegheny River, the property map and yes, the DEED that is registered in the county court house does show that the RR owns the railroad bed AND in most cases the ground right down to the riverbank at the "high water mark".

The RR does lease property to individuals for access, and in some cases they lease it to the PaFBC for access to the river.

You are legally correct. But I don't view railroads as private companies in the same way that I don't view Comcast or Verizon as a private company. Its really a utility with government monopoly rights not afforded to private land owners or private companies. By the letter of the law, I would certainly lose this argument. I don't agree with the letter of the law.

I'm not going to rip a gate down on railroad land, but I'll sure as s**t walk, drive, and fish all over it, just like I do on Duke Energy land down in NC/TN.

Wow this thread sure got sidetracked. That never happens.

Fishing the back channel dam from shore used to be permitted on the island side. Boy was that some great fishing. Now it's mostly necessary to
have a boat or just trespass. Bummer

I've never fished that section of river but I'd like to. Have boat and could someone tell me of some practical places to launch a 19 foot boat(in good water conditions of course, not now). If I put in on the south side would I be able to go down to that area without going through locks. Any feedback would be appreciated.

There are buoys a few hundred yards from the dam. A boat is not allowed within that distance to the dam. The better fishing is closer. I have seen boats ignore the buoys, though I don't advise it. Depending on water level, it can be pretty choppy. You really can't get to the best fishing without violating the restrictions...

youll have to lock through if you put in at southside. you can launch at glenfield off of 65 and its a short run around the island. definitely suggest using waders and having a fishing partner. the dock is out. just a cement slab that goes into the river depending on how high the water is. current is tough and your boat will get banged up pretty good without a partner.

you can fish from shore at both sides of leetsdale/dashshields pretty easy. fishing is just as good imo. just sayin'

There are two launches below the dam. First is off East Beaver St. in Glenfield. Second is off Chestnut St. in Sewickley.

yeah boats can't get to where the best fishing was there, ur right cowboy.
commander, imo fishing at those other places u mentioned is good, but i have NEVER caught as many fish as i did right below the dam at the back channel on the island side. Morning, noon, night, no matter. Walleye, sauger, smallies, largemouth, white and striped bass, crappie, catfish, carp, gar, heck i even caught a trout there (prolly swam down from the montour creek). And most of the fish were decent sized too. It was the fishing version of a China Buffet restaurant! After 9/11 when they locked that side up, i went through a fishing depression
Then I started driving to Erie!
I would pay to be able to fish at that dam.

theyre all good. just a little different pattern at each one. im sure from shore the fishing is better since the back channel is smaller so the fish are all stacked up in a smaller area which imo makes it easier. just sayin'

to the best of my understanding, the railroad side of the back channel isnt posted. there were no 'no trespassing' or 'posted' sighns last time i went 4 months ago....the chain was put up because they dont want people driving back there and dumping garbage and stolen cars anymore. now theres a fence at the dam that u cant cross, but thats a different story. i gotta admit, i dont really care if its a containd area that makes the fishing easier.....its all fishing to me. besides, the terrain more than makes up for how easy the fish are to catch.....but again, its just my opinion.
